Diploma Thesis from the year 2002 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: very good, University of Salzburg (Anglistics-American Studies), language: English, abstract: Although I have never been a regular viewer of 'Star Trek' and thus would not con sider myself a "e;Trekkie"e;, I have chosen this quotation as a starting point as it very well ex presses the problem I will deal with in the following paper: being different in terms of culture, language, education, or social status. I have also chosen the above quotation because of its second line as it suggests a produc tive way of dealing with the difficulty of being different. Be it in a thousand years or in the present time, we have to find solutions to the problems that arise when people coming from totally different cultural or social backgrounds meet and have to live together. In the course of my studies at the University of Salzburg, I have come across a broad variety of topics related to the field of Linguistics. Among others, I dealt with the linguistic terminology at the beginning of our studies, some varieties of English, their main features, with Psycholinguistics, or with language acquisition but to name a few. However, one main topic of Linguistics that has always had a special attraction to me was the field of Sociolin-guistics. It has been interesting to hear how speakers cultural or social background, age, gen-der, or education, have an influence on their register. Furthermore, it is also important that language always represents a certain status or the membership to a certain ethnic group and/or minority. Normally, people who speak a certain dialect are proud of that and it means more to them than just speaking it. It represents heritage, tradition, and sometimes nationalism for them. They simply want to be different in order to dissociate themselves from other ethnic groups with different dialects.

Seminar paper from the year 1998 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: very good, University of Salzburg (Anglistics/ American Studies), course: Caribbean Prose and Poetry, language: English, abstract: Almost every inhabitant of the European continent has sometimes dreamed of the Caribbean or the West Indies as a possibible holiday destination. It is quite common in Europe to think in images of the West Indies. In peoples' minds, the Caribbean equals white beaches, palm trees or drinking Pina Coladas in the shadow of a tree with big leaves. The common image, though, also has another side: for most Europeans, the "e;islands in the sun"e; also mean poverty, a bad economic situation, underdevelopment and backwardness in many respects. Almost nobody over here knows that most of these islands have had a history, wars, and conflicts with other nations, especially with the colonising ones. What should not be neglected here is that all these factors of the islands' history have had an influence on the development of their languages both written and spoken. In this paper, I would like to deal with some of these factors and their influence on the language of the Caribbean people and their literature. On the one hand, I chose the topic Language for my final paper since my own interest within the English language lies within the field of linguistics, on the other hand because never before have I been in contact with the Caribbean variety of English which, in my opinion, deserves much more attention and research in the near future from a linguistic point of view. Language And Its Importance In The Caribbean -a title of a paper which might suggest that the topic is only treated from a linguistic point of view. Generally speaking, this paper tries to introduce a few of the varieties and dialects spoken in this area of the world, but also focuses on the importance of language in the daily lives of the Caribbean people and in their literature. Furthermore, I try to show the importance of language in literature by giving some references to certain books. At the beginning of this paper, I would like to deal with a topic which is basic for the understanding of language in the West Indies. The following chapter deals with the variety of Creole English .

Seminar paper from the year 2001 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: very good, University of Salzburg (Anglistics/American Studies), course: Jazz and American Popular Music, language: English, abstract: To many people, the relationship between the terms "e;jazz"e; on the one hand and "e;poetry"e; on the other hand might be anything else but obvious. On the one hand, jazz, one may argue, is a type of music, most of the time associated with black musicians, used for relaxation purposes or which is suitable for a nice evening out listening to a concert. The term poetry, on the other hand, is mainly associated with well-known poets like W.Shakespeare, W.Wordsworth, or W.B.Yeats. Everybody had to sit in school, learn poems by heart and had to recite them. Furthermore in poetry, concepts of rhymes, stanzas, rhythm, or metre have a major importance. Most of the time, poems have to be interpreted to fully get their meaning, which as well might be an obstacle to many readers to enjoy them, for inexplicable reasons. As mentioned above, poetry is closely linked to terms like rhythm and rhyme, and so is music. Almost any pop-song which has been composed in the last decades has a certain structure, a meaning when it has been interpreted, their lines rhyme and they are sung in a certain rhythm by the artists. We can observe the same phenomenon in jazz, where the artists sing or play on stage, they want to make their message clear to the audience that dances according to the rhythm and listens to the lyrics of the song. Thus, one might argue, there is a more than close and obvious link between jazz and poetry. Brian Dorsey, for example, states that poetry and music are two expressive idioms that naturally complement each other (ii)1. Many jazz-poets have set their lines to jazz, or even performed their po-ems with musical accompaniment. In this seminar-paper, I will deal with the link between jazz and poetry. At the beginning of this piece, I will define the concept of jazz-poetry, which has been a term in English Literary Criticism for many decades now. Furthermore, the paper will also deal with contemporary jazz-poetry. Starting from dialect poetry (Dunbar), moving on to one of its main and most important representatives, Langston Hughes, this paper then will compare jazz-poetry at the turn of the last century to contemporary jazz-poetry, interestingly enough at the turn of a new millennium. The comparison will not only focus on sociocultural backgrounds influencing music and poetry at specific times, but will also deal with the poems topics, how poems are structured, and their, if there are any, peculiarities, differences or similarities.

Seminar paper from the year 1999 in the subject American Studies - Linguistics, grade: Good, University of Salzburg (Anglistics/ American Studies), course: The Vocabulary of English: Lexical and Morphological Issues, language: English, abstract: There is no doubt, also - and especially - among experts, that our mental vocabulary is highly organised. There are a lot of relations between the single words of a language and the meanings of these words, respectively. Among linguists, these relations are called "e;semantic relations"e;, "e;sense relations"e; or "e;lexical relations"e;. These semantic relations can be analysed and described for the most part, and in the following, the most important ones of these relations are to be presented. In order to give a short, critical description of the state of the art, it must be said that there are lots of research projects on this topic. However, this paper can only include some of them. Literature which was used can be found under point six, List Of Works Cited . Project delimitations have only been made as far as detail is concerned. Since this paper is only a very short piece of research, the authors have confined themselves not to go into too much detail, but rather try to give a good survey of the topic. Lexical relations can be roughly divided into: Types of ambiguity (polysemy, homonymy) Types of congruence (synonymy, hyponymy, meronymy, relations of contrast) Lexical fields

On September 10-13, 1990, the first international meeting on Microsystem Technologies takes place at the Berlin International Congress Center. Most of the traditional congresses deal with themes that become more and more specific, and only a small part of the scientific world is reflected. The Micro System Technologies is attempting to take the opposite direction: During the last two decades the development of microelectronics was characterized by a tremendous increase of complexity of integrated circuits. At the same time the fields of microoptics and micromechanics have been developed to an advanced state of the art by the application of thin film and semiconductor technologies. The trend of the future development is to increase the integration density by combining the microelectronic, microoptic, and micro mechanic aspects to new complex multifunctional systems, which are able to comprise sensors, actuators, analogue and digital circuits on the same chip or on multichip-modules. Microsystems will lead to extensions of the field of microelectronic applications with important technical alterations and can open new considerable markets. For the realization of economical solutions for microsystems a lot of interdisciplinary cooperation and know-how has to be developed. New materials for sensitive layers, substrates, conducting, semiconducting, or isolating thin films are the basis for the development of new technologies. The increasing complexity leads to increasing interaction among electrical and non-electrical quantities.
