Seminar paper from the year 2001 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,0, University of Salzburg (Institut fur Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: Functional Linguistics: Focus on Lexicogrammar, language: English, abstract: The main reason for Michael A. K. Halliday, the "e;father"e; of systemic functional linguistics - and this report is based on functional linguistic analyses - to develop a new kind of grammar was that he saw the need to have a linguistic system that is more sociological in orientation. While Noam Chomsky, the most prominent of the so-called formal linguists, saw linguistics only as a means to describe the limits of language, Halliday and his fellow functional linguists are concerned with relating language to society, they try to figure out how the ways in which language is used have shaped its structure. My goal in this analysis was to relate language to society in a practical example, I have tried to explore the differences between two journalistic articles of the same magazine, but taken out of different departments as far as the content is concerned. My question was, Are there substantial differences in language between these articles?

Seminar paper from the year 1999 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,0, University of Salzburg (Inst. fur Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: The Vocabulary Of English: Lexical And Morphological Issues, language: English, abstract: There is no doubt, also - and especially - among experts, that our mental vocabulary is highly organised. There are a lot of relations between the single words of a language and the meanings of these words, respectively. Among linguists, these relations are called "e;semantic relations"e;, "e;sense relations"e; or "e;lexical relations"e;. These semantic relations can be analysed and described for the most part, and in the following, the most important ones of these relations are to be presented. In order to give a short, critical description of the state of the art, it must be said that there are lots of research projects on this topic. However, this paper can only include some of them. Literature which was used can be found under point six, List Of Works Cited . Project delimitations have only been made as far as detail is concerned. Since this paper is only a very short piece of research, the authors have confined themselves not to go into too much detail, but rather try to give a good survey of the topic.

Seminar paper from the year 1998 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Salzburg, language: English, abstract: Writing a paper that is called "e;Rastafarianism And Pan-Africanism In The Caribbean"e; represents a great challenge to me. The two terms "e;Rastafarianism"e; and "e;Pan-Africanism"e; are widely unknown among Central Europeans and especially among native German speakers, and I had been no exception before I dealt extensively with this topic. Therefore, although this is a literary term paper, I will present historical, religious and sociological facts along with linguistic annotations as a basic background to my literary studies in order to inform the reader and give him a more or less detailed survey ON Rastafarian culture and society. I regard it as necessary to give short definitions of Rastafarianism and Pan-Africanism and their relations to one another in the beginning, for the simple reason that many readers will hardly ever have come across these two terms before, but I will keep them short, because everything will be discussed in detail further on, at the examples of literary texts. These literary texts will comprise mainly songs, because the main possibility of expression for Rastafarian spokesmen is their music - Reggae.

Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Miscellaneous, grade: 1.0, University of Salzburg (Department of Geography and Geology), course: Seminar: Geographies of Inequalities, language: English, abstract: Amin points out that it is odd that the mainstream view of cities and regions is still one of territorial entities, although recent developments have been "e;transforming cities and regions into sites immersed in global networks of organization and routinely implicated in distant connections and influences"e;. These developments have become known as globalization and were they reason why spatial configurations (e.g. territorial borders) are no longer necessarily territorial or scalar, because "e;the social, economic, political and cultural inside and outside are constituted through the topologies of actor networks which are becoming increasingly dynamic and varied in spatial constitution"e; (Amin). This paper intends to outline the circumstances and consequences of the development identified by Amin in terms of the creation of new forms of inequality and disparity. The first part deals with definitions in the realm of borders and boundaries, the second part treats the historical, current and future meanings of borders and the third part draws the connection between borders and inequality.
