This book constitutes revised selected papers from the 20th International Workshop on Cellular Automata and Discrete Complex Systems, AUTOMATA 2014, held in Himeji, Japan, in July 2014. The 10 regular papers included in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 25 submissions.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Cellular Automata for Research and Industry, ACRI 2008, held in Yokohama, Japan, in September 2008. The 43 revised full papers and 22 revised poster papers presented together with 4 invited lectures were carefully reviewed and selected from 78 submissions. The papers focus on challenging problems and new research not only in theoretical but application aspects of cellular automata, including cellular automata tools and computational sciences. The volume also contains 11 extended abstracts dealing with crowds and cellular automata, which were presented during the workshop C&CA 2008. The papers are organized in topical sections on CA theory and implementation, computational theory, physical modeling, urban, environmental and social modeling, pedestrian and traffic flow modeling, crypto and security, system biology, CA-based hardware, as well as crowds and cellular automata.

ACRI 2010 was organized by the Complex Systems and - ti?cial Intelligence (CSAI) research center of the University of Milano-Bicocca as a forum for the presentation and discussion of specialized results as well as general contributions to the growth of the cellular automata approach and its application. Cellular automata represent a very powerful approach to the study of spatio-temporal systems where complex phenomena are built up out of many simple localinteractions. The ACRI conferenceserieswas?rstorganizedin Italy (ACRI1994inRende,ACRI1996inMilan,andACRI1998inTrieste),andafter having moved to other Europeanand international settings, this year came back to Italy: ACRI 2000 in Karlsruhe (Germany), ACRI 2002 in Geneva (Switz- land), ACRI 2004 in Amsterdam (The Netherlands), ACRI 2006 in Perpignan (France), and ACRI 2008 in Yokohama (Japan).In order to give a perspective in which both theoretical and applicational - pectsofcellularautomatacontributetothegrowthofthearea,thisbookmirrors the structure of the conference, groupingthe 74 papers into two main parts.

Most natural and artificial systems transform information in a predictable or programmable way; such transformation can be interpreted as harnessing nature for computing. Recently we have witnessed a burst of research in unconventional computing, resulting in the development of experimental prototypes of natural computers, plasmodium computers, reaction-diffusion processors, and DNA computers as well as theoretical paradigms of natural computation such as cellular automata, artificial chemistry, evolutionary computing, and neural networks. The International Workshop on Natural Computing (IWNC) brings together computer scientists, biologists, mathematicians, electronic engineers, physicists, and others to critically assess present findings in the field, and to outline future developments in nature-inspired computing. This compilation of papers presented at the most recent workshop, held in Nagoya, Japan, makes a valuable contribution to the understanding of natural computing.
