What is its function in the early 21st century and into the future?Sound Works examines these questions in four parts: Part 1, "Why This Sound?", presents an overview of the modern history of sound design. Part 2 is highly visual and provides a glance onto a sound designer's workbench and the current state of "Sonic Labor." Part 3 uses cultural analysis to explore our contemporary "Living with Sounds." The final and fourth part then proposes a series of anthropological and political interpretations of how “Sound Works” today.This book is not a manual on sound design; it instead argues for a cultural theory of sound design for sound designers and sound artists, for clients who commission a sound design and for researchers in the fields of sound studies, design research, and cultural studies

Sonic fiction is everywhere: in conversations about vernacular culture, in music videos, sound art compositions and on record sleeves, in everyday encounters with sonic experiences and in every single piece of writing about sound. Where one can find sounds one will also detect bits of fiction.In 1998 music critic, DJ and video essayist Kodwo Eshun proposed this concept in his book “More Brilliant Than The Sun: Adventures in Sonic Fiction”. Originally, he did so in order to explicate the manifold connections between Afrofuturism and Techno, connecting them to Jazz, Breakbeat and Electronica. His argument, his narrations and his explorative language operations however inspired researchers, artists, and scholars since then. Sonic Fiction became a myth and a mantra, a keyword and a magical spell. This book provides a basic introduction to sonic fiction. In six chapters it explicates the inspirations for and the transformations of this concept; it explores applications and extrapolations in sound art and sonic theory, in musicology, epistemology, in critical and political theory. Sonic fiction is presented in this book as a heuristic for critique and activism.

Die Serie 30Rock wälzt die medialen Erzählungen ihrer Epoche (und der Serie selbst) unaufhörlich um: in bislang sieben Staffeln, 140 Episoden, von 30 Autoren für 14 SchauspielerInnen geschrieben – rund um die Erfinderin und Hauptdarstellerin Tina Fey.

Seit 2005 beschäftigt sich der Autor mit Drohnentechnologien. Aber erst seit etwa zehn Jahren kann sich das Drohnen-Business in Deutschland und Europa, bedingt durch die veränderten rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen und unterstützt durch den politischen Willen, als selbsttragendes Geschäftsfeld entwickeln. Als Gesellschafter-Geschäftsführer eines Drohnenunternehmens hat der Autor in den Jahren 2019 bis 2023 im Rahmen des Antrags auf Zulassung eines Regelflugbetriebs im Bereich der medizinischen Logistik die dafür notwendigen technischen, ökonomischen und ökologischen Konzepte entwickelt. Die im Zulassungsantrag eingereichten Unterlagen dienten der Luftfahrtbehörde als Grundlage für die im Jahr 2023 erteilte Betriebsgenehmigung. Diese Zulassung erfolgte für einen Regelflugbetrieb in der höheren Risikoklasse SAIL III und schloss als erste Betriebsgenehmigung in Europa Drohnenflüge auch über bewohnten Gebieten ein. Die Vorteile des Einsatzes unbemannter Luftfahrzeuge in der medizinischen Logistik liegen auf der Hand: Stichworte wie Geschwindigkeitsvorteil, grüne Logistik und Kostenreduzierung werden oft als Argumente angeführt. Auch wenn hinter das Stichwort „Kostenreduzierung“ derzeit noch ein großes Fragezeichen zu setzen ist, kann mit dem Einsatz von Drohnen die Logistik im Gesundheitswesen zumindest deutlich flexibler organisiert werden. Eine der Fragen im Antragsverfahren betraf die Umweltverträglichkeit von Drohnenflügen. Umfangreiche Literaturrecherchen und die Auswertung von Forschungsergebnissen ergaben, dass zu diesem Thema noch keine hinreichend praxisrelevanten Ergebnisse vorliegen. Aus diesem Grund fasst die vorliegende Publikation die im Rahmen des Zulassungsverfahrens durchgeführten Recherchen, Untersuchungen und Tests zusammen. Dabei wird eine Systematik angewendet, die Umwelteinflüsse von Drohnenflügen wesentlich komplexer als bisherige Untersuchungen betrachtet. Anstatt allein die CO2-Re-duktion im Vergleich zum Transport von medizinischem Material auf der Straße zu betrachten, kommt ein gesamtheitlicher und vor allem praxisorientierter Ansatz zum Tragen. Um die geringen Auswirkungen von Drohnenflügen auf die Tierwelt nachzuweisen, wurden über 600 Drohnenflüge ausgewertet und Reaktionen von Tieren ermittelt. Wesentliche Inhalte des Buches sind:die Betrachtung von Grundlagen im Bereich des Umweltschutzes und Darstellung einer Auswahl relevanten Datenbestände und Informationsquellen.eine strukturierte Darstellung von unterschiedlichen Bauformen unbemannter Luftfahrzeugeeine Analyse der derzeitigen Entwicklungsrichtungen im Bereich von Drohnen und der für die Antriebe eingesetzten Energieträgereine Darstellung mit dem Transport von Gefahrstoffen verbundenen Herausforderungen in der auf Drohnen basierenden Logistik sowieeine Untersuchung des Einflusses von Drohnenflügen auf die Tierwelt und Vorschläge für die Umsetzung einer umweltschonenden Flugplanung.

An essential musical genre of the early 21st century, meme music affects virtually all areas of public discourse, music, and sound culture.Memes are part of public debates, they fuel political struggles and social movements, and they manifest new cultural trends. In the media constellation of the early 21st century, memes achieve this primarily through music and sound. Meme music as a musical genre is produced, consumed, and distributed on video platforms, instant messenger services, social media networks, and increasingly as part of marketing and television shows.This book provides an overview of the distinctive performance practices and sound production techniques of meme music, focusing on meme music since 2011, with a particular emphasis on the years of the so-called Great Meme War between 2016 and 2020. The author discusses both recent and historical antecedents, such as the novelty songs or dance instruction songs of the 20th century, but also the tradition of emblemata since the 16th century. The sheer abundance of meme creation and meme sharing then leads to the ultimate triumph of meme music: it establishes a widespread sonic vernacular precisely through its highly snackable genre and the breathtaking speed of its planetary distribution.
