This book presents an innovative approach for the reconstruction design of lost ancient Chinese machinery. By combining the creative mechanism design methodology with the mechanical evolution and variation theory, all feasible and appropriate designs that are consistent with the science theories and techniques of the subject's time period can be systematically recreated. South pointing chariots, walking machines (the wooden horse carriage and the wooden cow and gliding horse), the seismograph, and the astronomical mechanical clock, are used as illustrated examples. The cultural, scientific, and technological backgrounds of these achievements are explained. Before new literature and/or hardware evidences are found, this work provides a novel direction and a unique tool for studying the lost machinery in ancient China and around the world. Furthermore, after reacquaintance with invaluable ancient wisdom, we anticipate stimulating innovative machinery for our future.

The International Symposium on the History of Machines and Mechanisms is the main activity of the Permanent Commission (PC) for the History of Mechanism and Machine Science (HMM) of the International Federation for the Promotion of Mechanism and Machine Science (IFToMM). The first symposium, HMM2000, was initiated by Dr. Marco Ceccarelli and was held at the University of Cassino (Cassino, Italy) on May 11–13, 2000. The second symposium, HMM2004, was chaired by Dr. Marco Ceccarelli and held at the same venue on May 12–15, 2004. The third symposium, HMM2008, was chaired by Dr. Hong-Sen Yan and held at the National Cheng Kung University (Tainan, Taiwan) on November 11–14, 2008. The mission of IFToMM is to promote research and development in the field of machines and mechanisms by theoretical and experimental methods, along with their practical applications. The aim of HMM2008 is to establish an international forum for presenting and discussing historical developments in the field of Mechanism and Machine Science (MMS). The subject area covers all aspects of the development of HMM, such as machine, mechanism, kinematics, design method, etc., that are related to people, events, objects, anything that assisted in the development of the HMM, and presented in the forms of reasoning and ar- ments, demonstration and identification, and description and evaluation.

This book presents a unique approach for studying mechanisms and machines with drawings that were depicted unclearly in ancient Chinese books. The historical, cultural and technical backgrounds of the mechanisms are explained, and various mechanisms described and illustrated in ancient books are introduced. By utilizing the idea for the conceptual design of modern mechanisms, all feasible designs of ancient mechanisms with uncertain members and joints that meet the technical standards of the subjects’ time periods are synthesized systematically. Ancient Chinese crossbows (the original crossbow and repeating crossbows), textile mechanisms (silk-reeling mechanism, spinning mechanisms, and looms), and many other artisan's tool mechanisms are used as illustrated examples. Such an approach provides a logical method for the reconstruction designs of ancient mechanisms with uncertain structures. It also provides an innovative direction for researchers to further identify the original structures of mechanisms and machines with drawings in ancient literature. This book can be used as a textbook and/or supplemental reading material for courses related to history of ancient (Chinese) machinery and creative mechanism design for senior and graduate students.

This book presents a systematic design methodology for decoding the interior structure of the Antikythera mechanism, an astronomical device from ancient Greece. The historical background, surviving evidence and reconstructions of the mechanism are introduced, and the historical development of astronomical achievements and various astronomical instruments are investigated. Pursuing an approach based on the conceptual design of modern mechanisms and bearing in mind the standards of science and technology at the time, all feasible designs of the six lost/incomplete/unclear subsystems are synthesized as illustrated examples, and 48 feasible designs of the complete interior structure are presented. This approach provides not only a logical tool for applying modern mechanical engineering knowledge to the reconstruction of the Antikythera mechanism, but also an innovative research direction for identifying the original structures of the mechanism in the future. In short, the book offers valuable new insights for all readers who are interested in the Antikythera mechanism.

Ancient China was outstanding in mechanical technology before the 15th century. Numerous ingenious machines were invented. However, due to incomplete documentation and loss of finished objects, most of the original machines cannot be verified and many of the inventions did not pass down to later generations. This book, based on the author’s research and teaching experiences over the last 20 years, is devoted to presenting an innovative methodology in the area of mechanical historiography for the systematic reconstruction design of ancient Chinese machines that have been lost to time. Its purpose is to generate all possible design concepts of lost machines. If the defined and/or concluded design specifications, topological characteristics, and - sign requirements and constraints are feasible, one of the resulting rec- struction designs should be the original design. Such an approach provides a logical tool for historians in ancient mechanical engineering and techn- ogy to further identify the possible original designs according to proven historical archives. However, this work will not deal with the credibility of historical literary works. It supposes that the lost machines existed, and tries to demonstrate the feasibility of reconstructing the lost designs. The book is organized in such a way that it can be used for teaching, research or self-study. Chapter 1 introduces the study, classifications, and process for the reconstruction design of ancient machinery.

Creative Design of Mechanical Devices presents engineering creative techniques and a novel creative design methodology for the systematic generation of all possible design configurations of mechanical devices. It provides a solid background to assist instructors teaching creative design in mechanical engineering. It helps students to hone their creative talents in an effective manner, and it supplies a powerful tool for design engineers to come up with fresh concepts to meet new design requirements and constraints, and/or to avoid patent protection of existing products. The text is organized in such a way that it can be used for teaching or for self-study. Part I (chapters 1 & 2) addresses background material. Part II (chapters 3-5) covers creative techniques for engineering problem solving. Part III (chapters 6-10) presents a methodology for the creative design of mechanical devices based on the concepts of generalization and specialization. Part IV (chapters 11-14) offers design examples to illustrate the applications of the creative design methodology. The book can be used for undergraduate courses of engineering design and/or senior design projects. It can also be adopted for graduate courses of advanced machine design, advanced kinematics, and/or special topics for teaching the subject of creative design in mechanical engineering. This book should fill the needs both for academic teaching and industrial applications, for the systematic thinking and generation of new design concepts for mechnical devices.
