A beautifully produced volume featuring the work of a major German artist. While a face may be considered a head, a head does not necessarily carry a face. Between 2015 and 2017, German artist Max Neuman, known for painting anonymous figures, drew a series of heads. Each head is a moment, each facing the viewer as if looking into a crowd, each distinguishable from the other. Who are they? May we call them portraits? Do they look back? Do they resemble spirits? Some Heads reproduces these haunting drawings along with an essay by cultural theorist and curator Hubertus von Amelunxen that questions the heads and faces while dwelling upon the effacement of individuality.

For thousands of years, people have built so-called calendar buildings: buildings that served as sundials for measuring time or were used for astronomical calculations. The most famous examples include the Pyramids of Giza, the Megalithic Temples of Malta, the Solarium Augusti on Rome’s Campus Martius, or the ancient observatories in Korea, Baghdad, Cairo, or Samarkand. The oldest known archaeo-astronomical device dates back to around 6000 BC and was discovered only some 20 years ago at Nabta Playa in Egypt. The German photographer Hans Pieler (1951-2012) dedicated himself comprehensively to these calendar buildings. In a wide-ranging photographic project spanning 15 years, Pieler travelled the world in the search for such sites, studied them, and recorded many of them in striking photographs. His interest was focused both on the architecture and its particular coding through the respective culture as well as on the theory of photography, the allegorical image of the time.Due to Pieler’s premature death in 2012, the fascinating project remained unfinished and unpublished. This book now for the first time features a selection of some 100 of the best shots from the artist’s estate. Complemented by illuminating essays, they form a unique photographic study of these architectures and their meaning and purpose as a reflection of time in stone.Text in English and German.

Volume 4.1 of Michael Müller’s catalogue raisonné examines the issue of whether the Holocaust can be depicted, as well as the artistic approach to evil. It is devoted to works commenting on four paintings by Gerhard Richter entitled "Birkenau" attempting to reappraise a cruel historical fact in the Auschwitz II/Birkenau extermination camp in various artistic forms. The critical commentaries on Richter are accompanied by many less conspicuous, quieter, even wounded works by Müller, which were on show in the Museum im Kulturspeicher Würzburg in 2022/23 and in St. Matthäus Kirche in Berlin in 2023. The catalogue in German, English and Chinese documents the most important works of this difficult artistic encounter, which are then contextualised in a detailed essay by art historian Lukas Töpfer. Volume 7.1 of Michael Müller’s catalogue raisonné is the first volume highlighting the artist’s activity as a curator. It focuses on the exhibition series Deine Kunst at the Städtische Galerie Wolfsburg, which he curated from 2019-22. This series comprised a novel presentation of the collection, as well as being an artistic intervention. In 2019, Müller had been invited to make a personal selection from the Städtische Galerie’s collection and present the works to the public over the next few years. The artist and curator decided against staging a single exhibition; instead, he elected to present the collection in five successive versions and changing contexts, each focusing on different content and form. The individual versions were somewhat eccentric, and Müller staged them in a way extremely suggestive of an artwork – the curator even gradually transformed the exhibition spaces, down to the smallest detail.

The fourth volume in the planned catalogue raisonné of Michael Müller’s artistic work comprising over 40 volumes a unique project spanning decades – not only offers an overview of Müller’s painterly oeuvre, but also functions as an exhibition catalogue. The 24-part painting as well as the exhibition as a whole elaborate on the Greek myth of the twins Castor and Pollux, the Dioscuri, which has received little attention from art history or philology and philosophy to date. In addition to the history of the works’ creation, a compilation of historical textual sources and an extensive interview with the artist, essays, and a lyrical composition by American literary scholar and translator Stanley Lombardo will update the story of the Dioscuri for the 21st century. Accompanying essays by Hubertus von Amelunxen, Stanley Lombardo, Lukas Töpfer, Cora von Pape and Rudolf Zwirner, poems by Stanley Lombardo and Michael Krüger, a foreword by Gero Heschl and introductory words by Philipp Demandt. Look inside

An Archive of the Avant-Gardes The Edizioni Conz of the Italian collector, publisher and photographer Francesco Conz–including portfolios, large silkscreen prints on fabrics and objects–are among the finest and most elaborate art editions of the second half of the 20th century. A friend and patron of Viennese Actionism, Fluxus, Concrete Poetry, and Lettrism, he was an obsessive, knowledgeable enthusiast open to all the arts, for whom hospitality, the magic of community, and respect for the arts were more important than any mercantile aspirations. This publication is the first comprehensive catalogue raisonné of the editions published by Conz between 1972 and 2009. Comprising more than 500 editions, it is both a reflection of his passions and a memorial to the art of the avant-gardes. Texts by contemporaries such as Alison Knowles, Dick Higgins, Milan Knižak, Eugen Gomringer, Emmett Williams, Nicholas Zurbrugg, and others complete the richly illustrated catalogue.
