Collecting Data among Paramilitaries
Ethnographic fieldwork on pro-government volunteers

This book offers the first practical guide to studying state-aligned fighters and volunteers through ethnographic research in war.Drawing on fieldwork carried out during the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war, the book shows why understanding pro-government mobilization requires close, sustained engagement with the people involved rather than relying only on documents or statistics. It follows researchers from the planning stage through their time in the field, explaining how access is negotiated, how safety is managed, and how relationships are built in unpredictable and often dangerous environments. Over six chapters, the work compares three forms of field immersion—short visits to front-line areas, repeated returns over time, and long stays lasting weeks or months—and explains the benefits and limitations of each in grasping mobilization and life in war in all their diversity. It also introduces two tools to help future researchers: ‘information spread’, which focuses on collecting rich and varied material rather than large numbers of interviews and ‘reflexive engagement’, which encourages researchers to recognize how their background, emotions, and presence shape the research process. The book argues that armed conflict dynamics, operational settings, varying security levels, and the rapidly evolving conditions of the field site necessitate the adoption of innovative experimental strategies. This book will be of much interest to students of ethnographic methods, civil wars, armed conflict, political violence and International Relations in general.
Post-Communist Civil Society and the Soviet Legacy
Challenges of Democratisation and Reform in the Caucasus

This book argues that the weakness of civil society in the post-Soviet Caucasus is a result not only of post-communist political and economic problems, but also of the effects of historical legacies. These influence both formal and informal civil societies and weaken the countries' ability to facilitate democratisation.

Exploring why, when and under which circumstances individuals decide to take up arms mobilizing for pro-government militias, Huseyn Aliyev draws on insights from long-standing ethnographic fieldwork among former and active members of Ukraine’s pro-government volunteer battalions, and an original database of militias’ obituaries, to offer this complex and in-depth explanation of the phenomenon of pro-government mobilization. Revealing the patterns and dynamics of individual mobilization into pro-government militias, this study is critical to understanding how the Ukrainian nation succeeded in repelling Russian aggression both in 2014-15 and in 2022, but also essential to explaining how and why hundreds of pro-government militias emerge in the context of armed conflicts in different parts of the world.

How Socio-Cultural Codes Shaped Violent Mobilization and Pro-Insurgent Support in the Chechen Wars

This book argues that the existing scholarship on asymmetric conflict has so far failed to take into account the role of socio-cultural disparities among belligerents. In order to remedy this deficiency, this study conceptualizes socio-cultural asymmetry under the term of asymmetry of values. It proposes that socio-cultural values which are based upon the codes of retaliation, silence, and hospitality – values which are intrinsic to honor cultures, yet absent from modern institutionalized cultures – may significantly affect violent mobilization and pro-insurgent support in that they facilitate recruitment into and support for insurgent groups, while denying such support to incumbent forces. Utilizing Russia's counterinsurgency campaigns in the First and Second Chechnya Wars as an empirical case study, this study explains how asymmetry of values can have an effect on the dynamics of contemporary irregular wars.
