This book summarizes research into the buckling and postbuckling response of laminate plates made of long-fibre reinforced plastics, eg. CFRP and GFRP. It reviews the theoretical, numerical and experimental devleopments that have taken place over the past twenty-five years in the field of laminated plate buckling response. The book is divided into four parts. Part 1 covers the underlying plate buckling theory. Part 2 covers three major numerical techniques (Series/Ritz, Finite Element and Finite Strip) and their application to laminated plate buckling analysis. Part 3 describes a variety of important "complicating effects", such as shear deformation and delaminations, and their influence on buckling response. Part 4 focuses on experimental studies of the buckling of panels in compression. Individual chapters are written by leading experts in the field and will serve as an important source reference for future research developments in laminated plate buckling response. "Buckling and Postbuckling of Composite Plates" should be of interest to academics, research and design engineers and post graduate students working in the field of advanced composite structures.This book should be of interest to all those involved in composite research/development with particular emphasis on engineering applications.

The Conference was organised and sponsored by Paisley College of Technology. It was co sponsored by the Scottish Development Agency, the National Engineering Laboratory, the USAF European Office of Aerospace Research and Development, and the US Army Research, Development and Standard isation Group-UK. It forms a natural and ongoing progression from the highly successful First and Second International Conferences on Composite Structures (ICCS/l and ICCS/2) held at Paisley in 1981 and 1983, respectively. To label composites as rather specialised, sophisticated, space-age structural materials would be to underestimate greatly their wider industrial potential. It is unquestionably true that they will play an increasingly dominant, if not decisive, role in aerospace engineering. Indeed a future aircraft industry without composites as the prime structural materials is inconceivable. However, in an energy-conscious world the high specific weights and stiffnesses of composites make them an attractive proposition in every sphere of transportation engineering. This fact is soundly underlined in one of the Plenary papers contained herein and in one of the sessions devoted to this subject. I t would also be a considerable mistake to interpret composites as simply lightweight alternatives to conventional metallic structural materials.

Surely this is the very oxygen necessary to ignite the fir~s of innovation and invention amongst pioneers of research.

The Conference was organised and sponsored by Paisley College of Technology in association with the Scottish Development Agency and the National Engineering Laboratory. It forms a natural progression from the highly successful First International Conference on Composite Structures (lCCS/l) held at Paisley in September 1981. The last few decades have seen phenomenal advances in research and of composite materials with new and exciting structural development possibilities being unearthed on an almost daily basis. Composites have been rightly heralded as space-age materials of the future. However, along with the rather specialised aerospace applications a growing awareness of the wider potential of composites is also unmistakable. The extensive composite materials research programmes of the fifties and sixties are now yielding fruit in abundance, with composites being used in virtually every area of structural engineering from transportation to pressure vessels and so on. Although significant weight savings, paramount in transportation engineering, are possible, composites have gone far beyond being simply lighter than conventional materials. They offer real structural advantages with almost unbounded potential. The ability to tailor a particular matrix material to suit prevailing environmental conditions whilst maintaining adequate reinforcement to withstand applied loading is unquestionably an attractive proposition.
