This volume critically challenges the current creative city debate from a historical perspective. In the last two decades, urban studies has been engulfed by a creative city narrative in which concepts like the creative economy, the creative class or creative industries proclaim the status of the city as the primary site of human creativity and innovation. So far, however, nobody has challenged the core premise underlying this narrative, asking why we automatically have to look at cities as being the agents of change and innovation. What processes have been at work historically before the predominance of cities in nurturing creativity and innovation was established? In order to tackle this question, the editors of this volume have collected case studies ranging from Renaissance Firenze and sixteenth-century Antwerp to early modern Naples, Amsterdam, Bologna, Paris, to industrializing Sheffield and nineteenth-and twentieth century cities covering Scandinavian port towns, Venice, and London, up to the French techno-industrial city Grenoble. Jointly, these case studies show that a creative city is not an objective or ontological reality, but rather a complex and heterogenic "assemblage," in which material, infrastructural and spatial elements become historically entangled with power-laden discourses, narratives and imaginaries about the city and urban actor groups.

This volume explores the intersection of political history and consumption history by conceptualizing the "politics of consumption" as a discursive process in which consumers and acts of consumption are framed and politicized by state- and market-driven actors for broader societal objectives. Drawing on a diverse range of case studies from the North Atlantic world between the early nineteenth century and the 1980s, the authors examine how power dynamics shape consumption practices, regulation, and discourse. The contributions in this study address key themes such as municipal governance of food markets, consumer citizenship in political debates, the nationalist framing of commodities, anti-imperial sartorial practices, and the rhetoric of consumer austerity during economic crises. By situating consumption within the communicative space of political ideologies, the volume highlights how discourses around consumption not only reflect but also actively construct social hierarchies, national identities, and economic policies. Ultimately, the study underscores the necessity of integrating discursive approaches with material analyses to deepen our historical understanding of the politicization of consumption.This book will appeal to students, researchers and scholars of political history, consumption studies, and cultural history.The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of History of Retailing and Consumption.

A Cultural History of Shopping was a Library Journal Best in Reference selection for 2022.The 'consumer revolution' of the 18th century has been the subject of much debate among historians but it seems clear there was also a 'retail revolution': a period of unprecedented growth in material goods was accompanied by a proliferation of retail spaces and techniques which brought new fashions and imported commodities to the homes of consumers. Governments responded to a growing culture of polite and civilized behavior across society by stimulating urban renewal for leisure and shopping: new pavements, street lighting, green promenades, theatres, coffee houses, and adjacent shopping streets were laid-out everywhere in Europe. As the 18th century drew to its close, ‘shopping’ had become a publicly accepted and celebrated leisure pursuit, gaining its proper meaning in multiple languages. Looking at suburbs as places of creativity gives rise to novel and thought-provoking narratives that typically run counter to the idea that suburbs are sites of "ordinary," "mundane," and "everyday" practices. Far from being geographies of "nowhere" – dull, materialistic, and monotone – suburbs are unpacked as being heterogeneous and historically layered places of living, work, and creation. Situating creativity in place and time, Creativity from Suburban Nowheres displaces mainstream understandings of creativity and widespread stereotypes commonly associated with the suburbs.Contributors explore the particular forms of creativity that suburbs elicit both in the process of their making, materialization, and community construction, and in the myriad ways in which suburbs are inhabited and experienced. They highlight accounts of suburbs as places that give people the space and latitude to shape individual and collective identities through creative practices at odds with mainstream culture, and often remote from the classic agglomeration "assets" associated with inner cities.Anchored in historical and geographical research, this volume highlights how and in what forms creativity should be understood in the suburbs, why and when creativity can be found, and how the notion of suburban creativity overthrows ingrained and dominant normative viewpoints. Rather than seeing creativity arise despite its suburban location, Creativity from Suburban Nowheres illuminates the emancipatory potential of suburbs for creativity.
