This book constitutes the proceedings of the Third International Conference on Internet Science held in Florence, Italy, in September 2016.The 25 papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in this volume. They were organized in topical sections named: collective awareness and crowdsourcing platforms¸ collaboration, privacy and conformity in virtual/social environments; internet interoperability, freedom and data analysis; smart cities and sociotechnical systems.

Thisstate-of-the-artsurveyoftechnologies,algorithms,models,andexperiments in the area of Internet Quality of Service is the ?nal report of COST (European Cooperation in the ?eld of Scienti?c and Technical Research) Action 263,Qu- ity of future Internet Services, http://www. fokus. fraunhofer. de/cost263 (QofIS). COST 263 ran from January 1999 until October 2003 with the participation of some 70 researchers from 38 organizations from 14 European countries (France, Hungary, Italy, Sweden, UK, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Switzerland, Finland, Greece, Romania, and Spain). The Action - longed to the COST area "Multimedia and Internet Communication"; together with COST 264, Networked Group Communication, this Action continued the e?ort started in 1992 by COST 237, Multimedia Telecommunications Services. Both groups have combined their e?orts now in the Network of Excellence in Emerging Networking Experiments and Technologies, http://www. ist-e-next. net (E-NEXT) of the 6th European Framework program. The book consists of seven chapters that were written in 18 months by 67 individual authors.The main objective of this book is to report the state of the art in the area of QofIS, as percieved by the authors, including achievements that wereoriginatedby the authors. The book wasdesigned in a top-downm- ner: after three years of running the Action with close co-ordination of research e?orts, it was easy to achieve a consensus on the table of contents. To ensure the content quality the following roles were de?ned and assigned to COST 263 members: chapter editor, chapter author, chapter reader.

The Second IFIP Workshop on Autonomic Communication (WAC 2005) took place on October 2–5, 2005, in Athens, Greece. The previous (and first) edition of WAC took place in Berlin in 2004 and its next (and third) edition in Paris in 2006. The workshop was organized by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and was supported by the EU-funded IST-FET Autonomic Communication Coordination Action (ACCA – IST-6475). Additional support was provided by the EU-funded IST Network of Excellence E-NEXT (IST-506869). Finally, IFIP TC6 provided scientific sponsorship through Working Groups IFIP WG6. 6 (Management of Networks and Distributed Systems) and IFIP WG6. 3 (Performance of Communication Systems). The workshop was organized at a time when the – yet to be well defined – field of autonomic communication (AC) is attracting the interest of both the scientific community and the research funding organizations. The latter is manifested, on one hand, by the numerous recent relevant research exploratory forums, workshop panels, preliminary forward-looking position papers, research outlooks and frameworks and, on the other hand, by the commitment of the FET program of the European Commission in Europe to funding long-term research in this area for the next four years. Consequently, the second edition of WAC was highly exploratory and included a nice mix of technical work addressing some already identified problems and well-articulated ideas on the direction this field should take and the fundamental problems whose solution would enable autonomicity.

This was the first conference jointly organized by the IFIP Working Groups 6. 2, 6. 3, and 6. 4. Each of these three Working Groups has its own established series of conferences. Working Group 6. 2 sponsors the Broadband Communications series of conferences (Paris 1995, Montreal 1996, Lisboa 1997, Stuttgart 1998, and Hong-Kong 1999). Working Group 6. 3 sponsors the Performance of Communication Systems series of conferences (Paris 1981, Zürich 1984, Rio de Janeiro 1987, Barcelona 1990, Raleigh 1993, Istanbul 1995, and Lund 1998). Working Group 6. 4 sponsors the High Performance Networking series of conferences (Aaren 1987, Liège 1988, Berlin 1990, Liège 1992, Grenoble 1994, Palma 1995, New York 1997, Vienna 1998). It is expected that this new joint conference will take place every two years. In view of the three sponsoring Working Groups, there were three separate tracks, one per Working Group. Each track was handled by a different co chairman. Specifically, the track of Working Group 6. 2 was handled by Ulf Körner, the track of Working Group 6. 3 was handled by Ioanis Stavrakakis, and the track of Working Group 6. 4 was handled by Serge Fdida. The overall program committee chairman was Harry Perros, and the general conference chairman was Guy Pujolle. A total of 209 papers were submitted to the conference of which 82 were accepted. Each paper was submitted to one of the three tracks.
