Chemisorption and Reactions on Metallic Films, Volume 1 is a six-chapter text that describes the role of evaporated metal films in advancing the understanding of the metal-gas interface chemistry. Chapter 1 presents electron microscopy and diffraction studies and their contributions in elucidating the growth and structure of polycrystalline and epitaxially grown films. Chapter 2 describes the techniques of preparation and characterization of metallic films and examines the heats of adsorption, electrical conductivity, surface area, and sticking probabilities of such films. Chapter 3 discusses the strength of pairwise interactions; the influence of the intermetallic bond on the equilibrium shape of metal crystallites; the bonding of individual metal atoms to different crystallographic planes; the interaction of metal atoms and crystallites with non-conducting substrates; and the effects of residual gases on this interaction. Chapters 4 and 5 address the adsorption of metallic films, with an emphasis on general trends in adsorptive and electronic properties of bulk metals. These chapters also discuss the effects of adsorption on the electrical conductance of island-like and coherent films and on the ferromagnetic properties of films. Chapter 6 evaluates the application of infrared spectroscopy to the studies of the surfaces of metal films and the use of the available infrared spectroscopic data in reconciling the results of adsorption studies on oxide-supported metal particles with those obtained with clean evaporated metal films prepared under ultra high vacuum conditions. Tacitus's Germania has been an abiding interest for all who study the Roman world from a northern European perspective. Anderson’s edition, first published in 1938, was designed to replace that of Furneaux and to take particular account of the light thrown by archaeology on Tacitus's account of the Germanic peoples. These proceedings reflect the major scientific contribution by the First International Congress of the European Federation for Medical Informatics. The European Federation for Medical Informatics is a co-operative venture between the National Informatics Societies of Europe. It is sponsoring this first inter­ national meeting organised by the Medical Specialist Groups of the British Society under the guidance of a European Scientific Programme Committee. The challenge of medical informatics has been well taken and the scientific papers by its members cover a wide range of topics dealing with medical records, laboratory investigation, indexing and administrative systems, nursing records, planning and administration modelling, data bases, text processing, transferability, user education, privacy, etc. Not published in this volume are presentations by industry about hardware and software. Also at the meeting there will-be teaching sessions for doctors, nurses, scientists and administrators who are just entering this field which are also not published. Medical informatics has established itself as an important area of medical activity and its growing application, as this conference illustrates, suggests a very rich potential for the future. Aids to medical decision making and modelling are newer areas of activity, where significant progress has been made. Sociological changes have taken place to meet this challenge and developments in the issues of privacy and confidentiality are important, as also are user education, and the teaching of medical informatics to medical students and to doctors.
