In this book, Professor Lounesto offers a unique introduction to Clifford algebras and spinors. The initial chapters could be read by undergraduates; vectors, complex numbers and quaternions are introduced with an eye on Clifford algebras. The next chapters will also interest physicists, and include treatments of the quantum mechanics of the electron, electromagnetism and special relativity with a flavour of Clifford algebras. This book also gives the first comprehensive survey of recent research on Clifford algebras. A new classification of spinors is introduced, based on bilinear covariants of physical observables. This reveals a new class of spinors, residing between the Weyl, Majorana and Dirac spinors. Scalar products of spinors are classified by involutory anti-automorphisms of Clifford algebras. This leads to the chessboard of automorphism groups of scalar products of spinors. On the analytic side, Brauer-Wall groups and Witt rings are discussed, and Caucy's integral formula is generalized to higher dimensions.

This book provides a self-contained introduction to quantum groups as algebraic objects. Based on the author's lecture notes from a Part III pure mathematics course at Cambridge University, it is suitable for use as a textbook for graduate courses in quantum groups or as a supplement to modern courses in advanced algebra. The book assumes a background knowledge of basic algebra and linear algebra. Some familiarity with semisimple Lie algebras would also be helpful. The book is aimed as a primer for mathematicians and takes a modern approach leading into knot theory, braided categories and noncommutative differential geometry. It should also be useful for mathematical physicists.

This tract sets out to give some idea of the basic techniques and of some of the most striking results of Diophantine approximation. A selection of theorems with complete proofs are presented, and Cassels also provides a precise introduction to each chapter, and appendices detailing what is needed from the geometry of numbers and linear algebra. Some chapters require knowledge of elements of Lebesgue theory and algebraic number theory. This is a valuable and concise text aimed at the final-year undergraduate and first-year graduate student.

These notes constitute a faithful record of a short course of lectures given in São Paulo, Brazil, in the summer of 1968. The audience was assumed to be familiar with the basic material of homology and homotopy theory, and the object of the course was to explain the methodology of general cohomology theory and to give applications of K-theory to familiar problems such as that of the existence of real division algebras. The audience was not assumed to be sophisticated in homological algebra, so one chapter is devoted to an elementary exposition of exact couples and spectral sequences.

A comprehensive treatment of elliptic functions is linked by these notes to a study of their application to elliptic curves. This approach provides geometers with the opportunity to acquaint themselves with aspects of their subject virtually ignored by other texts. The exposition is clear and logically carries themes from earlier through to later topics. This enthusiastic work of scholarship is made complete with the inclusion of some interesting historical details and a very comprehensive bibliography.

Numerical Ranges II is a sequel to Numerical Ranges of Operators on Normed Spaces and of Elements of Normed Algebras written by the same authors and published in this series in 1971. The present volume reflects the progress made in the subject, expanding and discussing topics under the general headings of spatial and algebra numerical ranges and further ranges.

The study of abelian manifolds forms a natural generalization of the theory of elliptic functions, that is, of doubly periodic functions of one complex variable. When an abelian manifold is embedded in a projective space it is termed an abelian variety in an algebraic geometrical sense. This introduction presupposes little more than a basic course in complex variables. The notes contain all the material on abelian manifolds needed for application to geometry and number theory, although they do not contain an exposition of either application. Some geometrical results are included however.

This exposition of research on the martingale and analytic inequalities associated with Hardy spaces and functions of bounded mean oscillation (BMO) introduces the subject by concentrating on the connection between the probabilistic and analytic approaches. Short surveys of classical results on the maximal, square and Littlewood-Paley functions and the theory of Brownian motion introduce a detailed discussion of the Burkholder-Gundy-Silverstein characterization of HP in terms of maximal functions. The book examines the basis of the abstract martingale definitions of HP and BMO, makes generally available for the first time work of Gundy et al. on characterizations of BMO, and includes a probabilistic proof of the Fefferman-Stein Theorem on the duality of H11 and BMO.

Convex polytopes are the analogues in space of any dimension of convex plane polygons and of convex polyhedra in ordinary space. This book describes a fresh approach to the classification of these objects according to their symmetry properties, based on ideas of topology and transformation group theory. Although there is considerable agreement with traditional treatments, a number of new concepts emerge that present classical ideas in a quite new way. For example, the family of regular convex polytopes is extended to the family of 'perfect polytopes'. Thus the familiar set of five Platonic polyhedra is replaced by the less familiar set of nine perfect polyhedra. Among the many unsolved problems that arise, that of finding all perfect polytopes, and more generally all perfect convex bodies, is perhaps the most attractive. This book will be of value to specialists and graduate students in pure mathematics, especially those studying symmetry theory, convex bodies, and polytopes.

This introduction to recent work in p-adic analysis and number theory will make accessible to a relatively general audience the efforts of a number of mathematicians over the last five years. After reviewing the basics (the construction of p-adic numbers and the p-adic analog of the complex number field, power series and Newton polygons), the author develops the properties of p-adic Dirichlet L-series using p-adic measures and integration. p-adic gamma functions are introduced, and their relationship to L-series is explored. Analogies with the corresponding complex analytic case are stressed. Then a formula for Gauss sums in terms of the p-adic gamma function is proved using the cohomology of Fermat and Artin-Schreier curves. Graduate students and research workers in number theory, algebraic geometry and parts of algebra and analysis will welcome this account of current research.

This is the expanded notes of a course intended to introduce students specializing in mathematics to some of the central ideas of traditional economics. The book should be readily accessible to anyone with some training in university mathematics; more advanced mathematical tools are explained in the appendices. Thus this text could be used for undergraduate mathematics courses or as supplementary reading for students of mathematical economics.

In this book Professor Rees introduces and proves some of the main results of the asymptotic theory of ideals. The author's aim is to prove his Valuation Theorem, Strong Valuation Theorem, and Degree Formula, and to develop their consequences. The last part of the book is devoted to mixed multiplicities. Here the author develops his theory of general elements of ideals and gives a proof of a generalised degree formula. The reader is assumed to be familiar with basic commutative algebra, as covered in the standard texts, but the presentation is suitable for advanced graduate students. The work is an expansion of lectures given at Nagoya University.

This book is concerned with the modern theory of Fourier series. Treating developments since Zygmund's classic study, the authors begin with a thorough discussion of the classical one-dimensional theory from a modern perspective. The text then takes up the developments of the 1970s, beginning with Fefferman's famous disc counterexample. The culminating chapter presents Cordoba's geometric theory of Kayeka maximal functions and multipliers. Research workers in the fields of Fourier analysis and harmonic analysis will find this a valuable account of these developments. Second year graduate students, who are familiar with Lebesgue theory and are acquainted with distributions, will be able to use this as a textbook which will bring them up to the exciting open questions in the field.

This book, which is almost entirely devoted to unbounded operators, gives a unified treatment of the contemporary local spectral theory for unbounded closed operators on a complex Banach space. While the main part of the book is original, necessary background materials provided. There are some completely new topics treated, such as the complete spectral duality theory with the first comprehensive proof of the predual theorem, in two different versions. Also covered are spectral resolvents of various kinds (monotomic, strongly monotonic, almost localized, analytically invariant), and spectral decompositions with respect to the identity. The book concludes with an extensive reference list, including many papers published in the People's Republic of China, here brought to the attention of Western mathematicians for the first time. Pure mathematicians, especially those working in operator theory and functional analysis, will find this book of interest.

The p-adic numbers, the earliest of local fields, were introduced by Hensel some 70 years ago as a natural tool in algebra number theory. Today the use of this and other local fields pervades much of mathematics, yet these simple and natural concepts, which often provide remarkably easy solutions to complex problems, are not as familiar as they should be. This book, based on postgraduate lectures at Cambridge, is meant to rectify this situation by providing a fairly elementary and self-contained introduction to local fields. After a general introduction, attention centres on the p-adic numbers and their use in number theory. There follow chapters on algebraic number theory, diophantine equations and on the analysis of a p-adic variable. This book will appeal to undergraduates, and even amateurs, interested in number theory, as well as to graduate students.

This book considers convergence of adapted sequences of real and Banach space-valued integrable functions, emphasizing the use of stopping time techniques. Not only are highly specialized results given, but also elementary applications of these results. The book starts by discussing the convergence theory of martingales and sub-( or super-) martingales with values in a Banach space with or without the Radon-Nikodym property. Several inequalities which are of use in the study of the convergence of more general adapted sequence such as (uniform) amarts, mils and pramarts are proved and sub- and superpramarts are discussed and applied to the convergence of pramarts. Most of the results have a strong relationship with (or in fact are characterizations of) topological or geometrical properties of Banach spaces. The book will interest research and graduate students in probability theory, functional analysis and measure theory, as well as proving a useful textbook for specialized courses on martingale theory.

This book is an introduction to the use of triangulated categories in the study of representations of finite-dimensional algebras. In recent years representation theory has been an area of intense research and the author shows that derived categories of finite-dimensional algebras are a useful tool in studying tilting processes. Results on the structure of derived categories of hereditary algebras are used to investigate Dynkin algebras and interated tilted algebras. The author shows how triangulated categories arise naturally in the study of Frobenius categories. The study of trivial extension algebras and repetitive algebras is then developed using the triangulated structure on the stable category of the algebra's module category. With a comprehensive reference section, algebraists and research students in this field will find this an indispensable account of the theory of finite-dimensional algebras.

In recent years the interplay between model theory and other branches of mathematics has led to many deep and intriguing results. In this, the first book on the topic, the theme is the interplay between model theory and the theory of modules. The book is intended to be a self-contained introduction to the subject and introduces the requisite model theory and module theory as it is needed. Dr Prest develops the basic ideas concerning what can be said about modules using the information which may be expressed in a first-order language. The purpose of this book is to provide an introduction to the theory of jet bundles for mathematicians and physicists who wish to study differential equations, particularly those associated with the calculus of variations, in a modern geometric way. One of the themes of the book is that first-order jets may be considered as the natural generalisation of vector fields for studying variational problems in field theory, and so many of the constructions are introduced in the context of first- or second-order jets, before being described in their full generality. The book includes a proof of the local exactness of the variational bicomplex. A knowledge of differential geometry is assumed by the author, although introductory chapters include the necessary background of fibred manifolds, and on vector and affine bundles. Coordinate-free techniques are used throughout, although coordinate representations are often used in proofs and when considering applications.

This volume is an outgrowth of the LMS Durham Symposium on L-functions, held in July 1989. The symposium consisted of several short courses, aimed at presenting rigorous but non-technical expositions of the latest research areas, and a number of individual lectures on specific topics. The contributors are all outstanding figures in the area of algebraic number theory and this volume will be of lasting value to students and researchers working in the area.

The study of permutation groups has always been closely associated with that of highly symmetric structures. The objects considered here are countably infinite, but have only finitely many different substructures of any given finite size. They are precisely those structures which are determined by first-order logical axioms together with the assumption of countability. This book concerns such structures, their substructures and their automorphism groups. A wide range of techniques are used: group theory, combinatorics, Baire category and measure among them. The book arose from lectures given at a research symposium and retains their informal style, whilst including as well many recent results from a variety of sources. It concludes with exercises and unsolved research problems.

A polarised variety is a modern generalization of the notion of a variety in classical algebraic geometry. It consists of a pair: the algebraic variety itself, together with an ample line bundle on it. Using techniques from abstract algebraic geometry that have been developed over recent decades, Professor Fujita develops classification theories of such pairs using invariants that are polarised higher-dimensional versions of the genus of algebraic curves. The heart of the book is the theory of D-genus and sectional genus developed by the author, but numerous related topics are discussed or surveyed. Proofs are given in full in the central part of the development, but background and technical results are sometimes just sketched when the details are not essential for understanding the key ideas. Readers are assumed to have some background in algebraic geometry, including sheaf cohomology, and for them this work will provide an illustration of the power of modern abstract techniques applied to concrete geometric problems. Thus the book helps the reader not only to understand about classical objects but also modern methods, and so it will be useful not only for experts but also non-specialists and graduate students.

Representation theory plays an important role in algebra, and in this book Manz and Wolf concentrate on that part of the theory which relates to solvable groups. The authors begin by studying modules over finite fields, which arise naturally as chief factors of solvable groups. The information obtained can then be applied to infinite modules, and in particular to character theory (ordinary and Brauer) of solvable groups. The authors include proofs of Brauer's height zero conjecture and the Alperin-McKay conjecture for solvable groups. Gluck's permutation lemma and Huppert's classification of solvable two-transive permutation groups, which are essentially results about finite modules of finite groups, play important roles in the applications and a new proof is given of the latter. Researchers into group theory, representation theory, or both, will find that this book has much to offer.

Design theory is a branch of combinatorics with applications in number theory, coding theory and geometry. In this book the authors discuss the generalization of results and applications to quasi-symmetric designs. The coverage is comprehensive and will be useful for researchers and graduate students. This book is devoted to the theory of group representations, a young and promising area of modern algebra. It provides a detailed exposition of several central topics in the field, leading to the most current advances and developments. Much of the included material has never been available in book form before. It is intended for a broad audience of researchers and graduate students, working in abstract algebra and its many applications.

The study of (special cases of) elliptic curves goes back to Diophantos and Fermat, and today it is still one of the liveliest centres of research in number theory. This book, which is addressed to beginning graduate students, introduces basic theory from a contemporary viewpoint but with an eye to the historical background. The central portion deals with curves over the rationals: the Mordell-Weil finite basis theorem, points of finite order (Nagell-Lutz) etc. The treatment is structured by the local-global standpoint and culminates in the description of the Tate-Shafarevich group as the obstruction to a Hasse principle. In an introductory section the Hasse principle for conics is discussed. The book closes with sections on the theory over finite fields (the 'Riemann hypothesis for function fields') and recently developed uses of elliptic curves for factoring large integers. Prerequisites are kept to a minimum; an acquaintance with the fundamentals of Galois theory is assumed, but no knowledge either of algebraic number theory or algebraic geometry is needed. The p-adic numbers are introduced from scratch, as is the little that is needed on Galois cohomology. Many examples and exercises are included for the reader. For those new to elliptic curves, whether they are graduate students or specialists from other fields, this will be a fine introductory text.

Many classical and modern results and quadratic forms are brought together in this book. The treatment is self-contained and of a totally elementary nature requiring only a basic knowledge of rings, fields, polynomials, and matrices, such that the works of Pfister, Hilbert, Hurwitz and others are easily accessible to non-experts and undergraduates alike. The author deals with many different approaches to the study of squares; from the classical works of the late 19th century, to areas of current research. Anyone with an interest in algebra or number theory will find this a most fascinating volume.

The use of geometric methods in classical mechanics has proven to be a fruitful exercise, with the results being of wide application to physics and engineering. Here Professor Marsden concentrates on these geometric aspects, and especially on symmetry techniques. The main points he covers are: the stability of relative equilibria, which is analyzed using the block diagonalization technique; geometric phases, studied using the reduction and reconstruction technique; and bifurcation of relative equilibria and chaos in mechanical systems. A unifying theme for these points is provided by reduction theory, the associated mechanical connection and techniques from dynamical systems. These methods can be applied to many control and stabilization situations, and this is illustrated using rigid bodies with internal rotors, and the use of geometric phases in mechanical systems.
