Exploring the contentious relationship between trade and labour, this book looks at the impact of the EU’s ‘new generation’ free trade agreements on workers. Drawing upon extensive original research, including over 200 interviews with key actors across the EU and its trading partners, it considers the effectiveness of the trade-labour linkage in an era of global value chains.

The EU believes trade can work for all, claiming that labour provisions in its free trade agreements ensure that economic growth and high labour standards go hand-in-hand. Yet whether these actually make a difference to workers is strongly contested. This book explains why labour provisions have been profoundly limited in the EU’s agreements with the CARIFORUM group, South Korea and Moldova. It also shows how the provisions were mismatched with the most pressing workplace concerns in the key export industries of sugar, automobiles and clothing, and how these concerns were exacerbated by the agreements’ commercial provisions. This pioneering approach to studying the trade-labour linkage provides insights into key debates on the role of civil society in trade governance, the relationship between public and private labour regulation, and the progressive possibilities for trade policy in the twenty-first century.

This book will appeal to research scholars, post-graduate students, trade policy practitioners, policy researchers allied to labour movements, and informed activists.

We live in perilous times: the truths of Christianity are under daily attack. Anti-religious books are everywhere — even in “Christian” bookstores. Consider The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins, God is not great by Christopher Hitchens, or The End of Faith by Sam Harris. These books and others are converting America to a secular, atheist state. Plus, Islam is growing worldwide. Fewer people identify themselves as Christians than in the past, a decrease of 10 to 20 percent in just the last few years. Young people are leaving the church in record numbers, as many as 70 percent in a decade. Intellectual skepticism is growing at an unprecedented pace as the truths of the Gospels are under daily assault. What can we do? Clearly we must confront these attacks and beat them at their own game: reason and science. James Harrison shows us how to do this in The Pattern & The Prophecy: God’s Great Code. At the core of all the sciences is mathematics. The author proves God put as much mathematics into His Word as he placed in His Works. Everyone knows the number of the Antichrist, but who knows the number of Christ or the number of Jesus? And how is Jesus’ number related to Noah, to being born again, and the resurrection. And since fishermen never count fish, what is the purpose of exactly 153 fish from John 21:11? Harrison reveals all this and much, much more proving mathematics lies at the heart of God’s Holy Word from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21, the Bible’s first and last verses. Armed with this absolute certainty Christians can convert any non-believer. As Isaiah 54:17 says, “No weapon forged against you will prevail.” This book is destined to become an American classic. Look for yourself! Included are many color photographs, numerous illustrations, bibliography, proofs, and three indexes: scriptural, number, and subject. Easy to read and informative, this book will enrich the spiritual life of every Christian.

In the endless debate about the Two Cultures no book until this attempted to provide a selection of scientific writing on specific themes to stimulate students of arts subjects into discussion and writing about the nature of science and its relationship with the rest of life. This book is based on a selection of prose passages written by scientists about science, supplemented by notes and a brief linking commentary.

Originally published in 1965, the passages were chosen to illustrate or comment on different aspects of eleven main themes, ranging from surveys of changing ideas on the nature of the universe and the material of which it was made, to evolution past and future and the relation of science with religion and art. Most of the extracts were from contemporary authors, but there are passages by Aristotle, Bacon, Boyle, Hooke, Newton, Dalton, Faraday and Darwin.

At the end of the book there are suggestions for discussion to accompany each chapter, to encourage the study of the use of language in consideration of the nature, history and role of science.
