As a graduate student a decade ago, I recall vividly reading the inaugural issue of the Journal of Behavioral Medicine when it appeared in 1978. Its purpose was described as "a broadly conceived interdisciplinary publication devoted to fur­ thering our understanding of physical health and illness through knowledge and techniques of behavioral science:' The articles in that first issue addressed such topics as the biofeedback treatment of neuromuscular disorders, anxiety manage­ ment of Type A behavior, and premorbid psychological factors related to cancer incidence. At that time, coursework in behavioral medicine was in its infancy at my university, and I, along with many classmates, was eager to learn more of this "new and emerging field:' Thinking back to those times, it is astonishing for one to reflect on the rapid evolution of behavioral medicine and its current status as a clinical and scientific discipline. Organizations such as the Society of Behavioral Medicine now include a broad-based membership that is convened yeady at a major convention. In addition to the Journal of Behavioral Medicine, professionals can avail them­ selves of several other specialty journals (Annals of Behavioral Medicine, Behavioral Medicine Abstracts, Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pedi­ atrics) as well as the numerous articles on behavioral medicine that appear regu­ larly in the clinical psychology, psychiatry, rehabilitation, and behavior therapy literature. And behavioral medicine services and training programs are encoun­ tered with increasing frequency within clinic, hospital, and academic settings.

This volume addresses the topic of self-injurious behavior (SIB) in per­ sons with developmental disabilities. Among professionals and the lay public alike, there is little debate over the seriousness of self-injury, its detrimental effects, and the need for therapeutic intervention. At the same time, there are divergent views concerning its etiology and treat­ ment. Understanding the causes of self-injury, for example, requires an analysis of biological factors, socioenvironmental variables, communica­ tion competencies, and in complex clinical cases, the interrelationships among these influences. There is also uncertainty with regard to the function of self-injury. Put simply, why would people willingly inflict injury upon themselves? Finally, although there is little disagreement about the necessity to intervene for self-injury, clinicians do not make uniform therapeutic recommendations, and, in fact, considerable dif­ ferences in treatment selection are common. This fact is most apparent when one considers the ongoing controversy with regard to aversive and nonaversive programming. Our premise for this volume is that a greater understanding of self­ injurious behavior is dependent upon an empirical research base. Theories of causality must be conceptually valid and capable of being evaluated objectively. Treatment must be functionally determined, operationalized, and replicable across personnel and settings. For these reasons, we have assembled chapters by individuals who are experi­ enced clinicians and researchers in the fields of psychology, medicine, psychiatry, education, psychopharmacology, and developmental dis­ abilities.

Sport psychology is a topic of growing interest. Many professionals read journals such as TheInternational Journal of Sports, Journal of Sport Behavior, Journal of Applied Sport Psychology,Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, and The Sport Psychologist. In August 2008, Monitor onPsychology, the monthly publication of the American Psychological Association (APA), featured aspecial issue on sport psychology. Indeed, Division 47 of APA is devoted to "the scientific, educational,and clinical foundations of exercise and sport psychology." The North American Society for thePsychology of Sport and Physical Activity (NASPSPA) and the Association for the Advancement ofApplied Sport Psychology (AAASP) convene conferences each year to present scientific findings andnew developments in a rapidly expanding field. The AAASP and other organizations also qualifyprofessionals as certified sport and exercise psychology consultants. Applied behavior analysis (ABA), in particular, has been an instrumentalapproach to behavioral coaching in many sports, including baseball (Osborne, Rudrud, & Zezoney,1990), basketball (Pates, Cummings, & Maynard, 2002), figure skating (Ming & Martin, 1996), football(Ward & Carnes, 2002), golf (Pates, Oliver, & Maynard, 2001), ice hockey (Rogerson & Hrycaiko,2002), soccer (Brobst & Ward, 2002), swimming (Hume & Crossman, 1992), and tennis (Allison &Ayllon, 1980). ABA stresses the application of learning theory principles, objective measurement ofathletic skills, controlled outcome evaluation, and socially significant behavior-change. Cognitivebehavior therapy, or CBT, also has been a dominant approach to psychological intervention insports(Meyers, Whelan, & Murphy, 1996; Weinberg & Comar, 1994). CBT addresses athletic performancethrough cognitive-change methods combined with behavioral practice and environmental modifications.The purpose of the book described in this proposal is to compile the most recent experimental andapplied research in behavioral sport psychology.
