Virginia Woolf’s Microgenesis engages with Virginia Woolf’s writings in the context of her own unique methodological approach to mind, to meaning, and to making whole. This volume argues that this preoccupation with the metaphysics of “wholeness,” a dread, indeed, of both fragmentation and what endures as an organic unity, places Woolf’s writings alongside Jason Brown’s microgenesis, formulated as a formative, emergent, and dynamic process of cognitive activity. However, crucially, it is not by assembling multiple flows of sense data into more complex constructions that we might perceive the objective world but by sculpting away the unfit to reveal the structure of the world as a surfacing reality. In so many ways, Woolf’s novels represent an enactment of microgenetic theory, demonstrating and alerting us to the mind/brain state as a process of continual unfolding through progressive differentiation and discrimination to a distinct configuration – albeit one which may be deemed imperfect.That is not to say that Woolf’s fictions should be understood as anticipating Brown’s formulation of microgenetic theory as such but that they should be understood as illuminating the adaptive and evolutionary significance, and signification, of perceptual microgenesis in her various modes of theorisation – that is, her processes of tunnelling and transmuting, moments of being/nonbeing, and depth‑and‑surface. If ontogeny (individual development) recapitulates phylogeny (species development), this volume demonstrates that Woolf provides the momentariness of microgenesis to her fictions, a process which recapitulates both.Virginia Woolf’s Microgenesis is essential reading for researchers and students in Woolf Studies, process philosophy, new materialisms, literary theory, and modernist literature.

Following on from « Ce Salon à quoi tout se ramène »: Le Salon de peinture et de sculpture, 1791–1890, published in 2010 as an earlier volume in this series, this volume contains a selection of the papers given at the first major international conference to be held on the post-1789 Paris Fine Art Salon. Hosted by the University of Exeter in September 2013, the conference had its origins in the research project entitled Painting for the Salon? The French State, Artists and Academy, 1830–1852, funded in 2010–2012 by the UK’s Arts and Humanities Research Council, and its purpose was to situate findings of this research within the wider framework of the Salon’s nineteenth-century history. In this collection of twenty-three papers, fourteen in English, nine in French, established and new scholars of French art history examine the national and international artistic, political and cultural dimensions of the most important regular exhibition of contemporary art in the nineteenth-century world.

Walking and the French Romantics explores for the first time the relationship between walking and Romanticism in France. It maps this relationship as theme and practice, no social history of pedestrian tours in nineteenth-century France having been written. In this connection, the legacy of Rousseau and Senancour proves stronger than has been recognized, in spite of the pull of Paris and its legendary urban flâneurs. The author brings out the role of painters and of figures like Nodier, Didier and Dumas in encouraging writers to go (or imagine themselves) on the road and shows how and why pedestrian touring became popular with authors in the late 1830s. He discusses the impact of this fashion on major Romantic writers such as Nerval, Sand and Hugo. Finally he describes how walking lost its particular cultural connection with Romanticism in the 1840s.

The novels published by Isabelle de Charrière before the French Revolution offer a perceptive account of the psychology and the social climate of the late eighteenth century. The anti-Freudian psychoanalysis of the neurologist and psychiatrist Heinz Kohut (1913-81) is used in this study as a means of developing an awareness of the position of the fictional characters. Feminist and Freudian readings of Charrière’s novels of the 1780s have stressed the ‘closed’ deterministic atmosphere of contemporary society; this new study emphasises what can be called the ‘modern’ side of the novels: patriarchal society and individual needs confront each other and allow the relationships to be seen in a new light. By means of Kohut’s notion of ‘selfobject’ a rich insight is gained into the complex relationships described by Isabelle de Charrière.

This book studies the various definitions of animal nature proposed by nineteenth-century currents of thought in France. It is based on an examination of a number of key thinkers and writers, some well known (for example, Michelet and Lamartine), others largely forgotten (for example, Gleizes and Reynaud). At the centre of the book lies the idea that knowledge of animals is often knowledge of something else, that the primary referentiality is overlaid with additional levels of meaning. In nineteenth-century France thinking about animals (their future and their past) became a way of thinking about power relations in society, for example about the status of women and the problem of the labouring classes.This book analyses how animals as symbols externalize and mythologize human fears and wishes, but it also demonstrates that animals have an existence in and for themselves and are not simply useful counters functioning within discourse.

Polemical stupidity – a critical concept drawn from Bakhtin – denotes the strategic refusal to understand. It appears most familiarly in the character of the Fool (like Candide), who genuinely does not understand the world, thus unmasking its incoherence. But in literature it can cover too the stance of the narrator or author (who pretends to misunderstand). It also functions at the levels of genre and style, embracing parody and rewriting in general. It is a dialogic or open form of critical engagement. Though it can be found throughout Western literature, polemical stupidity is most richly characteristic of the writing of the French Enlightenment. This book suggests why, and traces its rise and fall as a discursive practice in the century from Pascal to Rousseau. Early chapters consider the concept itself, its emergence in Pascal’s Lettres provinciales, worldliness and unworldliness, and the new writing of 1660-1700 (critical history to fairy tales). The main part of the book, on the age of Enlightenment itself, contains successive chapters on Regency theatre, Montesquieu’s Lettres persanes, Marivaux, Voltaire, Diderot, and finally Rousseau who will not play.
