The Cognitive Behavioural Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP) is the only psychotherapy model developed specifically for chronic depression. In the latest addition to the successful Distinctive Features series, the developer of CBASP, James P. McCullough Jr., along with Elisabeth Schramm and J. Kim Penberthy, provides an accessible introduction to this approach, showing how it differs from other cognitive behavioural approaches, and highlighting those features – both theoretical and practical – that make it unique. The unparalleled problems of the chronically depressed patient are some of the most difficult that practitioners face. The disorder has usually continued for a decade or more and patients enter psychotherapy interpersonally withdrawn, detached and with little or no motivation to change. CBASP as A Distinctive Treatment for Persistent Depressive Disorder provides a new look into the phenomenological world of the patient and shows the reader why the world-view of the patient is a valid perception of reality. CBASP is designed to address the problems of the patient in a step-by-step manner. This book explores the therapist role and shows how the CBASP model enables therapists to address the patient’s depression in a zone of interpersonal safety. Patients are taught how to behave in an interpersonally facilitative manner and shown how everything they do has consequences for others (including the therapist) and on the social environment in which they live. CBASP as A Distinctive Treatment for Persistent Depressive Disorder will be essential reading for novice and experienced CBT therapists, counselors and psychotherapists treating chronic depression.

For more than a century, the psychotherapist role has been dominated by Freud’s neutrality rule: don’t become personally involved with patients! McCullough challenges this widely accepted dictum in a new treatment approach for the chronically depressed patient. He proposes disciplined personal involvement as an alternative to therapist neutrality with chronically depressed patients, describing how this approach can be used in a contingent manner to successfully modify pathological behavior. These latest guidelines expand on his pioneering work, Treatment for Chronic Depression: Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy(CBASP).In this new volume, Treating Chronic Depression with Disciplined Personal Involvement: CBASP, Dr. McCullough describes in detail what disciplined personal involvement is and how it is administered. The book was written during a current four-year national clinical trial sponsored by NIMH involving 910 chronically depressed outpatients being treated at eight sites in the U.S.The following topics will be covered:- Historical review of the psychotherapist neutrality role- Rationale for disciplined personal involvement in the treatment of chronic depression- Training veteran psychotherapists to administer disciplined personal involvement- Numerous verbatim case examples presented to illustrate therapist disciplined personal involvement - Appendix Section operationalizing the CBASP disciplined personal involvement techniques and discussing needed CBASP researchMcCullough’s fresh perspective and psychotherapy wisdom make this text a must read for all clinical practitioners, training clinicians in university settings, and psychotherapy researchers. Treating Chronic Depression with Disciplined Personal Involvement: CBASP offers a radically new alternative to the traditional therapeutic relationship.

This volume describes the Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP), a research-based approach designed to motivate chronically depressed patients to change and to help them develop needed problem-solving and relationship skills. Integrating elements of cognitive-behavioral and interpersonal therapy, this approach has been shown to be as effective as medication treatment in a recent 12-site national study with 681 chronically depressed outpatients. Even more significant, a combination of CBASP and pharmacotherapy produced a response rate of 85%--unprecedented for any large-scale randomized clinical trial of its kind--and demonstrated for the first time the superiority of combination treatment to either psychotherapy or pharmacotherapy alone. Filled with detailed case examples, the volume presents clear, step-by-step guidelines for using CBASP. Also discussed are ways to measure treatment outcomes; issues in research, training, and supervision; and managing common crises and problems in treatment.
