This volume is based on the proceedings of the International Workshop on Semantics of Specification Languages (SoSL) in Utrecht, the Netherlands, 25-27 October 1993. The aim of the workshop - the first in a proposed series - was to assess various attempts to formally define specification languages, and to identify a programme of work for further investigation. The papers provide a comprehensive overview of research into this important topic, with particular emphasis on recent developments in formal proof systems, proof checking, type consistency, static semantics, ad stepwise developments of specifications. In addition to the submitted papers, the volume includes three invited papers, each of which outlines the development of the semantics of a major specification language.

CONCUR'91 is the second international conference onconcurrency theory, organized in association with the NFIproject Transfer. It is a sequel to the CONCUR'90conference. Its basic aim is to communicate ongoing work inconcurrency theory. This proceedings volume contains 30papers selected for presentation at the conference (from 71submitted) together with four invited papers and abstractsof the other invited papers. The papers are organized intosections on process algebras, logics and model checking, applications and specification languages, models and nettheory, design and real-time, tools and probabilities, andprogramming languages. The proceedings of CONCUR'90 areavailable asVolume 458 of Lecture Notes in ComputerScience.

The lambda calculus was developed in the 1930s by AlonzoChurch. The calculus turned out to be an interesting modelof computation and became theprototype for untypedfunctional programming languages. Operational anddenotational semantics for the calculus served as examplesfor otherprogramming languages. In typed lambda calculi, lambda terms are classifiedaccording to their applicative behavior. In the 1960s it wasdiscovered that the types of typed lambda calculi are infact appearances of logical propositions. Thus there are twopossible views of typed lambda calculi:- as models of computation, where terms are viewed asprograms in a typed programming language;- as logical theories, where the types are viewed aspropositions and the terms as proofs. The practical spin-off from these studies are:- functional programming languages which aremathematically more succinct than imperative programs;- systems for automated proof checking based on lambdacaluli. This volume is the proceedings of TLCA '93, the firstinternational conference on Typed Lambda Calculi andApplications, organized by the Department of Philosophy ofUtrecht University. It includes29 papers selected from 51submissions.
