Scholars have long noted the widespread presence of “apocryphal” or “non-canonical” elements in Christian art. The most famous example is perhaps the consistent presence of the ox and the ass in visual representations of the nativity of Jesus, an element described in the Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew, but absent from the canonical birth narratives. While there is notable interest in this phenomenon—scholars of Christian apocrypha frequently illustrate lectures, essays, and monographs with these images, while scholars of Christian art regularly point readers to the texts—critical study has been surprisingly rare.Material Apocrypha examines both the physicality of apocryphal Christian texts (i.e. various aspects of the manuscripts or papyri themselves) and the representation of apocryphal narratives in other forms of material culture (e.g. frescos, mosaics, sculptures, icons, pilgrimage objects, reliquaries, etc.). It includes contributions from textual scholars and art historians. Beyond simply representing both perspectives, the essays in this volume will be very much in conversation with each other. A recurring theme is the “fluidity” in the development of both text and image, and the ways in which these developments proceeded both independently and interconnectedly. The volume also looks at the difference made by emerging digital media, with its capacity to represent the fluidity of both text and image in a way that was simply impossible even just ten years ago.

Tiere spielen eine herausragende, oft sonderbare Rolle in den fünf sehr unterhaltsamen und bedeutenden apokryphen Apostelakten, den Andreasakten, Johannesakten, Petrusakten, Paulusakten und den Thomasakten. Löwen, Bären, Hunde, Kakerlaken, Esel und sogar Robben kommen in diesen Erzählungen vor. Manche sind freundlich, manche böswillig und manche besitzen die Fähigkeit zu sprechen. Janet E. Spittler zeigt, dass diese Tierepisoden eine größere und viel komplexere Bedeutung haben als bisher angenommen. Sie liest diese Texte im Kontext der griechisch-römischen Naturgeschichte, Philosophie, den Fabeln sowie Prosatexten und präsentiert neue Interpretationen der jeweiligen tierbezogenen Episode.

In dieser Aufsatzsammlung, die größtenteils das Ergebnis eines Symposiums an der Universität Regensburg im Juni 2011 ist, untersuchen Wissenschaftler, die im weitesten Sinne zum antiken Mittelmeerraum arbeiten, die Darstellung von Wundern in der antiken Literatur. Die folgenden Schlüsselfragen werden angesprochen: Welche Haltung haben antike Autoren zu den Wundern aus, über die sie berichten? Welchen Stellenwert geben sie den Berichten über Wunder? Wie qualifizieren sie den Wahrheitsgehalt eines Berichtes, wie zweifeln sie ihn an oder wie leugnen sie ihn? Vor diesem Hintergrund stellt sich außerdem die Frage, wie sich die verschiedenen literarischen Genre und religiösen Kontexte, in denen die Wundergeschichten erzählt werden, aufeinander beziehen? Der Forschungsbeitrag dieses Bandes besteht vor allem in der Nebeneinanderstellung verschiedener Perspektiven: Sowohl jüdische als auch christliche und heidnische Autoren werden beleuchtet; Texte, die von wundersamen Geschehnissen erzählen, werden ebenso erörtert wie Texte, in denen die Autoren über solche Berichte nachdenken - im positiven wie im negativen Sinn.
