A synoptic edition of the English version of John Arderon’s De judiciis urinarum containing the commentary on Giles of Corbeil’s Carmen de urinis as preserved in Glasgow University Library, MS Hunter 328, from the early 15th century, and Manchester University Library, MS Rylands Eng. 1310, from the 16th century. The English version of De judiciis urinarum is a detailed uroscopic treatise instructing the mediaeval practitioner on the examination of urine with twenty colours and eighteen to nineteen contents, incorporating colour descriptions, diagnoses, medicines and information about urinary contents. The present edition offers the semi-diplomatic transcription of these hitherto unedited texts, accompanied by a glossary, notes and introduction, the latter containing the textual transmission of the text, a codicological/palaeographic description together with the analysis of the scribal language. The present edition will be useful as a primary source for research not only in Historical Linguistics but also in other related fields such as the History of Medicine or Ecdotics.

Odo de Meung’s De Viribus Herbarum was one of the most widely known pieces of Fachliteratur in the latter part of Middle English, corroborated on account of the number of translations hitherto preserved in the different European vernacular languages such as French, German and Danish. In Middle English, there are up to nine complete versions of Macer Floridus’ rendering, together with a number of fragmentary pieces. Still, Glasgow University Library, MS Hunter 497 (ff. 1r-92r) is the only English version of the text which remains so far unedited.The present edition offers the diplomatic transcription of MS Hunter 497, also accompanied by a glossary, notes and introduction. The latter has been conceived as a state of the art of the Hunterian witness, containing the textual transmission of the text, a codicological/palaeographic description together with a comprehensive analysis of its linguistic provenance and scribal practices. Therefore, the edition conforms itself as a primary source for research not only in Historical Linguistics but also in other related fields such as History of Medicine or Ecdotics.

The present edition offers the diplomatic transcription of MS Wellcome 542, housing a late Middle English hitherto unedited remedy-book based on the medical lore of Hippocrates, Socrates and Galen. A glossary, notes and introduction also accompany the edition. The introduction has been conceived as a state of the art of this scientific treatise, and deals with the textual transmission of the text, a codicological/palaeographic description together with the scribe’s dialect and idiolect. The edition therefore conforms itself as a primary source for research not only in Historical Linguistics but also in other related fields such as the History of Medicine or Ecdotics.

Late Modern English has traditionally been considered a period of linguistic stability in terms of language standardization. However, a careful examination of crucial aspects of its internal and external history reveals that this period still deserves scholarly attention. This book aims to offer valuable tools for the study of Late Modern English, along with a selection of studies that approach linguistic variation from various perspectives.In the first part, the book provides an account of some available corpora for the study of Late Modern English, representing different text types such as medical English or private correspondence, among others. Additionally, these corpora cover various dialects and early new varieties of English.In the second part, several corpus-based studies assess Late Modern English at different levels shedding light on the language of the period.

This book offers the semi-diplomatic edition of the Late Middle English manuscript Manchester, Chetham’s Library, MS Mun.A.3.127, which is housed at Chetham’s Library in Manchester. This codex contains a number of recipes to cure illnesses, a previous list of herbs and plants and an outline. This volume is accompanied by an introduction, a physical description of the witness and a glossary. Because of that, this book is a primary source of research in historical linguistics and in other fields of study such as the history of medicine.
