La guerra de España es la única ocasión histórica en que nuestro país ha desempeñado un papel protagonista en la historia del siglo XX. Tan solo en otro momento, mucho más grato en sus consecuencias, como fue la transición a la democracia, España ha resultado protagonista de primera fila en la vida de la humanidad. No puede extrañar, por lo tanto, que, desde una óptica nacional o extranjera, se haya considerado como eje interpretativo de nuestro pasado lo sucedido en ese periodo.Este tipo de interpretación tiene un obvio inconveniente que nace de considerar la totalidad de la historia contemporánea española como un camino inevitable hacia la guerra entre dos sectores de la sociedad enfrentados a muerte. Nada parecido a una guerra civil con centenares de miles de muertos se dio en otro país del Occidente europeo durante el primer tercio del siglo XX. Eso, sin embargo, no debe hacer pensar que el enfrentamiento violento fuera inevitable. Hasta el último momento la guerra civil pudo haber sido evitada. Los testigos presenciales, en especial los que tenían responsabilidad política de importancia, suelen considerar que no fue así, pero ello se debe, quizá, al deseo de exculparse por sus responsabilidades. En realidad, pocos desearon originariamente la guerra aunque hubiera muchos más a quienes les hubiera gustado que se convirtieran en reales sus consecuencias, es decir, el aplastamiento del adversario. Con el transcurso del tiempo ese puñado de españoles consiguió la complicidad de sectores más amplios y se olvidó que los entusiasmos políticos que llevaban a una España a desear imponerse sobre la otra implicaban el derramamiento de sangre.
