The book brings together research communities from different disciplines and countries, and offers an exchange about theoretical frameworks and practical experiences to guide research and policy "towards environmental innovation systems". The contributions selected explore new directions of research at the borderline between two established research traditions: systems of innovation and environmental innovations. For this purpose, the book draws on recent conceptual and empirical insights as well as on policy-oriented analyses. It is structured according to the four main areas of interest with respect to environmental innovation systems: conceptual foundations, empirical experiences, strategic approaches, and experiences with policy instruments.

Boycotting tropical timber reduces its economic value and provides an incentive to burn down forests, making them available for subsequent agricultural use or livestock farming. In contrast, a certification scheme for sustainably produced timber (tropical or non-tropical) protects the forests by raising their economic value. Examined here the impact of a certification scheme on German demand for tropical timber. A partial-equilibrium model is developed for the German tropical timber market as a whole as well as for five important submarkets representing 50% of the total demand. The results reveal that a credible certification scheme can induce a significant expansion of demand for sustainably produced tropical timber. This holds true for a scheme restricted to Germany as well as for an OECD-wide approach.

Mit welchen umweltpolitischen Massnahmen kann eine Richtungsänderung der Innovationsaktivitäten hin zu mehr Umweltinnovationen erreicht werden? Mit der steigenden Bedeutung umweltpolitischer Eingriffe in das Wirtschaftsgeschehen gewinnt diese Frage an Wichtigkeit. Während allgemein anerkannt wird, daß es u.a. unter dem Einfluß der staatlichen Umweltpolitik gelungen ist, die Entwicklung der Schadstoffemissionen vom Wirtschaftswachstum abzukoppeln, werden die Wechselwirkungen zwischen dem Einsatz umweltpolitischer Instrumente und dem Innovationsverhalten jedoch konträr diskutiert. Im Buch werden die Effekte umweltpolitischer Instrumente auf das umweltorientierte Innovationsverhalten von Unternehmen in einer theoretischen und empirischen Analyse untersucht. Die Untersuchung ist in methodischer und empirischer Hinsicht eine explorative Arbeit.
