Zugleich gibt es eine Tradition der Satztypbeschreibung, die Satztypen als Bündel von formalen Merkmalen auffasst, denen arbiträr bestimmte Bedeutungen zugeordnet sind („Satzmodus“). Dies wirft die Frage auf, ob sich Satztypen als Konstruktionen beschreiben lassen, bzw. welche Vor- und Nachteile eine solche Analyse gegenüber einer derivationellen Analyse hat. Eine konstruktionistische Analyse sollte den Unterschied zwischen den Standard-Satztypen wie Deklarativsatz, Interrogativsatz, Imperativsatz und anderen Konstruktionen erklären können und die Probleme der Bedeutungszuweisung ernst nehmen. Eine „Satztypengrammatik“ (welcher Provenienz auch immer) sollte anerkennen, dass es syntaktische Baueinheiten gibt, die kerngrammatischen Erwartungen widersprechen, aber in der Konversation eine wichtige Rolle spielen. Marie Neurath (1898-1986) was an illustrator and graphic designer who, from the mid-1940s to the late 1960s, created innovative non-fiction books for children. Together with her husband, politician and philosopher Otto Neurath (1882-1945), and artist and designer Gerd Arntz (1900-1988), she developed a method of visual representation in 1920s Vienna that became known as Isotype (International System of Typographic Picture Education). Influenced by the progressive ideas of the Vienna Circle, Isotype was intended to contribute to the democratization of knowledge. To this end, the Neuraths and their team created a special form of pictorial statistics that meant to make complex scientific relationships accessible to the layperson. In the postwar period, Marie Neurath developed several series of informative picturebooks for children that incorporated and further developed the Isotype principles. Although these picturebooks were hugely successful in their time, international picturebook research has barely acknowledged Marie Neurath’s legacy. This anthology is the first to elaborate Marie Neurath’s achievement as a transformer of knowledge for children and to analyze her distinctive, groundbreaking graphic method.

This is the first study to explore picturebooks of the Soviet Occupation Zone and the German Democratic Republic, analyzing them in the context of contemporary history, social and cultural developments and through a precise analysis of selected images and their context. By focusing on areas such as architecture and housing, consumer culture, traffic and transportation, including the iconic role of the Trabant, and the design of childhood, as seen in pioneer uniforms and institutions, the study identifies the unique blend of information about reality and socialist ideology typical of children's visual culture during this period. This specific combination was aimed at shaping children to become socialist personalities. The study thus demonstrates that pictorial representation and its textual integration are crucial for understanding childhood in the immediate post-war period and the German Democratic Republic.
