Satztypen werden gewöhnlich als Ergebnis einer modularen Interaktion morphologischer und syntaktischer Merkmale betrachtet, Konstruktionen sind dagegen als konventionelle, arbiträre Form-Bedeutungs-Paare definiert. Zugleich gibt es eine Tradition der Satztypbeschreibung, die Satztypen als Bündel von formalen Merkmalen auffasst, denen arbiträr bestimmte Bedeutungen zugeordnet sind („Satzmodus“). Dies wirft die Frage auf, ob sich Satztypen als Konstruktionen beschreiben lassen, bzw. welche Vor- und Nachteile eine solche Analyse gegenüber einer derivationellen Analyse hat. Eine konstruktionistische Analyse sollte den Unterschied zwischen den Standard-Satztypen wie Deklarativsatz, Interrogativsatz, Imperativsatz und anderen Konstruktionen erklären können und die Probleme der Bedeutungszuweisung ernst nehmen. Eine „Satztypengrammatik“ (welcher Provenienz auch immer) sollte anerkennen, dass es syntaktische Baueinheiten gibt, die kerngrammatischen Erwartungen widersprechen, aber in der Konversation eine wichtige Rolle spielen. Die Beiträge in diesem Band untersuchen anhand ausgewählter Datenbereiche das Verhältnis von Satztyp und Konstruktion aus unterschiedlichen grammatiktheoretischen Perspektiven.

Most scholars define reduplication as a formally restricted grammatical process, neatly distinguishing it from 'mere' repetition as a discoursal option. However, there is a fuzzy grey area between the two processes that has rarely been explored so far. In this timely collection, the phenomenon of exact repetition, understood broadly as the systematic iteration of one and the same linguistic item within relatively close syntactic proximity, is investigated from a number of angles. The volume contains studies from phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, and deals with a broad range of languages, including alleged 'reduplication avoiders'. In bringing together different theoretical perspectives, phenomenological domains, and methodologies, and in linking the fields of syntax and discourse to those of morphology and morphophonology, the volume provides new insights into the structure and meaning of exact repetition phenomena, and, more generally, into their status within a theory of language. The collection will appeal to formally and functionally oriented scholars from all subfields of linguistics, including typology.

This study aims at examining in detail the linguistic characteristics of sentential idioms ('idiomatische Sätze', IS) in German, e.g. Das kannst du dir an den Hut stecken.; Du hast wohl Tomaten auf den Augen!; Da lachen ja die Hühner!. In theoretically and empirically investigating their syntactic, semantic and pragmatic features and productive potential, it is shown that IS can only be described properly by looking at the interfaces between syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, and by systematically investigating pattern formation. In this respect, the study goes far beyond traditional phraseological research. As a theoretical background, the study refers to research on phraseology, sentence types and sentence mood, linguistic evaluation, morphological productivity, and the frameworks of Construction Grammar and Relevance Theory. Empirical evidence comes from a large corpus of written German, a linguistic experiment on productivity, and introspective data. With respect to syntax, the study shows that IS are bound to one or a few different sentence types, varying according to the degree of restriction of their speech act potential. The complex semantics of IS is shown to consist not only of a literal and an idiomatic, but also of a third, mediating representational level. The idiomatic meaning of IS is described as evaluative meaning. Pragmatically, IS are dependent on special contextual environments to obtain a proper interpretation. A context model is developed which makes use of certain categories of evaluation. Moreover, a relevance-theoretic approach is sketched in order to explain which functional advantages IS might have compared to non-idiomatic utterances. With respect to productivity, ten different idiomatic patterns of construction are identified and described in detail. It is experimentally demonstrated that these patterns are productive to a greater or lesser degree dependent on their internal syntactic, lexical, semantic and pragmatic features.
