Die Auswirkungen der unterschiedlichen Gesellschaftssysteme auf das Erziehungs- und Bildungswesen und die gravierenden Veränderungen seit der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts stehen im Mittelpunkt dieses Bandes. Aus der Distanz und im kritischen Rückblick auf eine Epoche lassen sich die Gegebenheiten, aber auch die Irrungen und Wirrungen gelassener und gerechter beurteilen. Konstruktion und Wandel der Kindheitsbilder, bildungspolitische Rahmenbedingungen für Schule und Schulreformen sowie Funktionalisierung und Ideologisierung erziehungswissenschaftlicher Positionen und die allmähliche Normalisierung der Disziplin werden grundlegend, vergleichend, länderspezifisch und -übergreifend analysiert. So entsteht ein differenziertes Bild der zeitgeschichtlichen Pädagogik in Mitteleuropa jenseits von Verdammung oder Beschönigung.

Herbartianism is without a doubt one of the most important pedagogic movements of the 19th century. While quoting J. F. Herbart, his followers – Herbartians – built a pedagogic system which strongly marked educational theory and practice not only in Europe. The book offers a detailed insight into the constitution of teacher training in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy with special emphasis on the situation in Slovenia. Along with the basic didactic principles the foreground is reserved for the understanding of teacher personality. This book contextualises the professional assignments of teachers and their education with the interests of school policy. This historical perspective offers a useful apparatus for the understanding of today’s debates about the professionalization of the teaching profession.

This book theoretically analyses the characteristics of (partner) collaboration and the relationship between the school and the community, emphasising the joint efforts they undertake to further the child’s development and learning. The diversity of experiences that such cooperation offers benefits all partners. The second aspect presented in the book pertains to the findings of a quantitative and qualitative empirical research study on cooperation between primary schools and various partners in the community. Our research findings indicate a variety of intertwined forms of cooperation between the school, school counsellors, parents, individuals and institutions in the community. Examples of good practice suggest that it is possible to establish quality cooperation in many different ways.
