For twenty years John Aitchison has been traveling the world to film wildlife for a variety of international TV shows, taking him to far-away places on every continent. The Shark and the Albatross is the story of these journeys of discovery, of his encounters with animals and occasional enterprising individuals in remote and sometimes dangerous places. His destinations include the far north and the far south, from Svalbard, Alaska, the remote Atlantic island of South Georgia, and the Antarctic, to the wild places of India, China, and the United States. In all he finds and describes key moments in the lives of animals, among them polar bears and penguins, seals and whales, sharks and birds, and wolves and lynxes.John Aitchison reveals what happens behind the scenes and beyond the camera. He explains the practicalities and challenges of the filming process, and the problems of survival in perilous places. He records touching moments and dramatic incidents, some ending in success, others desperately sad. There are times when a hunted animal triumphs against the odds, and others when, in spite of preparation for every outcome, disaster strikes. And, as the author shows in several incidents that combine nail-biting tension with hair-raising hilarity, disaster can strike for film-makers too.

For twenty years John Aitchison has been travelling the world to film wildlife for the BBC and other broadcasters, taking him to far-away places on every continent. The Shark and the Albatross is the story of these journeys of discovery, of his encounters with animals and occasional enterprising individuals in remote and sometimes dangerous places. His destinations include the far north and the far south, expeditions to film for Frozen Planet and other natural history series, in Svalbard, Alaska, the remote Atlantic island of South Georgia and the Antarctic. They also encompass wild places in India, China and the United States. In all he finds and describes key moments in the lives of animals, among them polar bears and penguins, seals and whales, sharks and birds, and wolves and lynxes. And, as the author shows in several incidents that combine nail-biting tension with hair-raising hilarity, disaster can strike for film-makers too. This is natural history writing at its absolute best: evocative, informative and gripping from first to last.

Numbering the Dead is a seminal account of the violent civil conflict that broke out around the city of Pietermaritzburg in 1987 and what ensued over the next three years. Aitchison and his colleagues, based at the Centre for Adult Education, documented and dissected the ebb and flow and the changing circumstances of this not-so-low intensity civil war in the region. They collected, computerised, and categorised literally thousands of instances of eyewitness or documentary evidence, and then applied an innovative synthesis of qualitative and quantitative approaches that uncovered the patterns and intimated the underlying causes. This book, mainly covering the period 1987 to 1989, presents a distillation of this monitoring work, conducted under unimaginably difficult and stressful conditions. It was originally done with the simple aim of stopping the killing by telling people in the province, in South Africa and the world what was happening, as accurately and truthfully as possible.

Language serves as both a symbol and a definer of culture. The well-being and integrity of a culture depend heavily on the strength and vitality of its associated language. It is for this reason that the process of language change within particular cultures needs to be monitored and scrutinized. This volume is a map-based analysis of patterns of language change, specifically the Welsh language. It concludes that the prime influences on the language derive from the large-scale socio-economic changes which have taken place in western society as a whole since the end of World War II.

This is an updated and extended version of the book previously published under the title "A Geography of the Welsh Language 1961-1991". The publication expands on the main themes addressed within the original text, makes reference to research, and presents sets of language data both for individuals and for households in wales. An additional chapter examines the impact of migration on the language, the relationship between social class and ability to speak Welsh, and the bases for the reproduction and maintenance of the language within the context of the family. The final chapter is extended and considers the prospects for the language, in the light of political and insitutional developments (including the Assembly), planning issues (most notably housing) and developments in the field of education. The implications of these and other socio-economic forces for the long-term well-being of the language are evaluated.

Statistical Concepts and Applications in Clinical Medicine presents a unique, problem-oriented approach to using statistical methods in clinical medical practice through each stage of the clinical process, including observation, diagnosis, and treatment. The authors present each consultative problem in its original form, then describe the process of problem formulation, develop the appropriate statistical models, and interpret the statistical analysis in the context of the real problem. Their treatment provides clear, accessible explanations of statistical methods. The text includes end-of-chapter exercises that help develop formulatory, analytic, and interpretative skills.
