This book seeks to explore the new frontiers in counter-terrorism research, analyses and practice, focusing on the imperative to rehabilitate terrorists. The post-9/11 world is in a very early stage of global rehabilitation both of terrorists and criminals. Nonetheless, some correctional rehabilitation programs have led convicted and suspected terrorists to express remorse, repent, and recant their violent ideologies and re-enter mainstream politics, religion and society. Although operational counter-terrorism initiatives have received both investment and attention, strategic counter-terrorism initiatives that ultimately end violence including terrorism but require patience and sustained efforts have been neglected by governments and received inadequate public coverage. This book is an early attempt to examine a few case studies both by practitioners and scholars. This book provides a better understanding of the process of deradicalization, and will be the first step towards exploring the development of tools necessary to examine and address challenges faced by practitioners.This book will be of much interest to students of terrorism and political violence, radical Islam, conflict resolution, war and conflict studies and IR/Security Studies.

This book aims to provide an overview of the importance of communities to mitigate the threat of terrorism, drawing key lessons and experiences from countries adopting community-based approaches. There has been growing recognition among countries to understand the construct of radical ideology and the tools needed to counter its narrative through a more socially inclusive approach, using communities as key stakeholders that have the resolve to be resilient in the fight against terrorism. The chapters provide invaluable insights on the psychological aspects of radicalization, the centrality of counter-ideology and case studies of approaches to promoting moderation, religious harmony and community engagement in building the resilience and resolve against terrorism.

The Rohingya Crisis aims to analyse communal violence in western Myanmar and highlight its transnational security implications. Based on ethnographic research in the Bangladesh-Myanmar borderland, the book analyses the complex often-contested narratives of the dynamics of communal violence and the role of various actors in this conflict. The Rohingya Crisis argues that the communal violence in western Myanmar has cascading security ramifications for South and Southeast Asia, and cautions that continued violence in the Rakhine state might lead to an escalation of transnational crime and militancy in the region. The political dynamics in Myanmar intersects with a rapidly evolving terrorist threat landscape in the Southeast Asian region, presenting an unenviable challenge of managing the Rohingya Crisis.
