Jerusalem, Rom, Santiago de Compostela - Pilgerfahrten werden zumeist mit diesen prominenten Fernpilgerzielen assoziiert. In der Vormoderne bestand das florierende Pilgerwesen aber nicht ausschlielich aus Fernwallfahrten, vielmehr fanden auch Pilgerreisen zu lokalen und regionalen Zielen statt. Sowohl Regional- als auch Fernwallfahrten waren Teil einer umfassenden Pilgerlandschaft. Dass die groen Fernpilgerziele die regionale Pilgerkultur und -infrastruktur beeinflussten, zeigt etwa die Blute von Devotionsorten an zentralen Pilgerrouten. Anhand ausgewahlter europaischer Beispiele untersuchen die Beitrage des Bandes Konjunkturen und Wechselverhaltnisse von Regional- und Fernwallfahrten zwischen dem 13. und 16. Jahrhundert. By systematically placing gender as a relational category in relation to others such as kinship, origin or age, they paint a complex picture of the changes, ambivalences and contradictions to which rule around 1500 was subject in its always, but never exclusively gendered nature.
