Development of planted forests in tropical and subtropical countries is accelerating to satisfy the ever-growing global demands for wood products. Indeed, it is expected that within 20 years half of all wood fibre in the world will be sourced from plantations, of which more than half are in the tropics and subtropics. As well as intensively-managed, industrial wood plantations, trees are increasingly being planted as part of farming systems, and to control erosion and rehabilitate degraded lands and forests. Active community involvement in tree planting as part of rural development is now widespread and welcome. This book provides an overview that sets plantation silviculture in the wider context of the development processes and their social, environmental and ecological impacts. For this new edition, the structure and approach of previous editions have been retained but every chapter has been comprehensively revised and updated. Two new chapters - 'clonal forestry' and 'ecological restoration' - have been added. The central theme remains the silviculture that underpins successful industrial planted forests. Overall the book provides an up-to-date account of silvicultural practices, some of the socio-economic essentials and the key role tree planting now plays in natural resource management and improving rural livelihoods in the tropics. Contemporary issues such as full stakeholder participation and sustainable management practices in planted forests are also addressed. This expanded third edition provides a comprehensive introduction to plantation forestry practices in the tropics as part of sustainable land use. Both the historical context and recent developments are presented so that students, professional foresters, development specialists, and all with an interest in tropical forest management will find this a valuable reference text.

In 1985 the author fulfilled for himself every forester's ambition - ownership of a woodland to manage and enjoy exactly as he thought fit. With his brother-in-law, he bought a neglected woodland in Hampshire and, with the help of family and friends, has brought it back to a working woodland, employing a combination of ancient and modern rural skills. A Wood of Our Own tells the story of all that has happened since the idea germinated: making the purchase, replanting, encounters with people and animals, the drama of two great gales, unravelling the history of the wood, and selling the timber.Julian Evans, forester for twenty-five years, author of two professional forestry books, and currently Chief Research Officer for the Forestry Commission, combines anecdote, natural history, and professional wisdom in a gripping story. The factual account of the purchase and management of the wood runs alongside an entertaining description of the people, events, and incidents associated with it. Fine cameo line drawings by John White, artist and forester, accompany the text.

Norman Lewis was the best not-famous writer of his generation, and a better writer than almost all who were. From the 1950s to the 1990s, he wrote books that have survived better than all but a handful of novels. For twenty years Lewis spied for the British government, raced Bugattis before the war, lived in Ibiza after it, and was a crack shot, flamboyant host, and businessman with Mafia connections. Julian Evans’ portrait is a fascinating personal account of a suburban fugitive and adventurer; a writer of unsurpassed humour, wisdom and compassion for the ridiculous; the Defoe of our times.'Magnificent . . . meticulous, spirited and colourful . . . a triumph' Jason Webster, New Statesman 'An excellent literary biography about one of the truly outstanding writers of our time . . . Sensitive and perceptive' Patrick Marnham, Daily Mail

The future of the world's forests is at the forefront of environmental debate. Rising concerns over the effects of deforestation and climate change are highlighting the need to conserve and manage existing forests and woodland through sustainable forestry practices. The Forests Handbook, written by an international team of both scientists and practitioners, presents an integrated approach to forests and forestry, applying our present understanding of forest science to management practices, as a basis for achieving sustainability. Volume One presents an overview of the world's forests; their locations and what they are like, the science of how they operate as complex ecosystems and how they interact with their environment. Volume Two applies this science to reality. It focuses on forestry interventions and their impact, the principles governing protection and on how we can better harness the enormous benefits forests offer. Case studies are drawn from several different countries and are used to illustrate the key points.Development specialists, forest managers and those involved with land and land-use will find this handbook a valuable and comprehensive overview of forest science and forestry practice. Researchers and students of biology, ecology and geography as well as forestry will find it equally accessible and useful.

The Pacific Ocean calls to mind a world of fabulous kingdoms and noble savages, guilt free sex and gin-clear lagoons, and a perfect idleness fed by lush fruits and fish-rich seas. Ever since Captain Cook first went to Tahiti in 1769 to observe the transit of Venus across the sun, this dream of the Pacific has not lost its force. But Julian Evans's journey through the island archipelagos of the Great Ocean was also informed by a quest into our more modern myths - such as Peacekeeper missiles and nuclear bombs being tested by the US Army. With humour and vivid imagery, honesty and a wickedly sardonic wit, Evans uncovers the reality of these two Pacific dreams: a brave new ocean where the islanders have money and booze, military coups and cold-war politics, atomic explosions and rising sea levels, but where, in the remotest atolls, beyond all our modernity and rationality, the old dream of islands continues to assert itself.

Planted forests, although only seven per cent of the world's forest resources, have superseded naturally regenerating forests as the principal source of industrial wood products. Lessening the pressure for wood production, tree planting has released natural forests to be managed for other purposes - carbon sinks, soil and water protection, conservation of biological diversity, recreation and amenity. Representing a complement, but not an alternative, to natural forests, planted forests have become increasingly important for reducing worldwide deforestation, loss of forest ecosystems and forest degradation. Examining the significance of this rapidly emerging world resource, chapters consider the strengths and weaknesses of planted forests, management objectives for their use and aspects of ownership and policy. Data from key production countries are used to evaluate the implications and sustainability of planted forests as a source of forest products as well as social and ecological issues.

'This is the account we've been starved of: an insight into Ukraine from an authoritative British writer who has skin in the country’s game. ‘Odesa is my discovered heart,’ confesses Julian Evans, who fell in love with a woman from this constantly beguiling Black Sea port and started a family there, ‘the place that's given me what I need for more than twenty-five years.’ An outsider turned insider, his deep personal involvement compelled him to the front line of an unprovoked war without precedent in Europe for nearly eighty years. His vivid, first-hand reportage shows how Odesa’s story is inseparable from Ukraine’s – and more than that, how it has become our story too.' -Nicholas Shakespeare
