Topological quantum field theories lie at the intersection of algebra, topology, and quantum field theory. The area is highly active, driven by recent developments in representation theory and topology, as well as developments in theoretical physics, including the study of topological phases of matter and topological symmetries. This book provides an accessible introduction to topological quantum field theories, along with basic notions of category theory - the natural mathematical setting for topological field theories - by describing these theories as a symmetric monoidal functor from a cobordism category to the category of vector spaces.Using Dijkgraaf–Witten theories as a recurring example, the book introduces key tools such as category theory, Hopf algebras, and tensor categories, providing a solid foundation for students aiming to pursue a more advanced study in quantum topology and related areas.The book concludes with an outlook connecting the foundational theory to recent developments and current research directions.The text is intended for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students in mathematics and theoretical physics. The present volume is a collection of seven papers that are either based on the talks presented at the workshop "Conformal field theories and tensor categories" held June 13 to June 17, 2011 at theBeijing International Center for Mathematical Research, Peking University,  or are extensions of the material presented in the talks at the workshop. These papers present new developments beyond rational conformal field theories and modular tensor categories and new applications in mathematics and physics. The topics covered include tensor categories from representation categories of Hopf algebras, applications of conformal field theories and tensor categories to topological phases and gapped systems, logarithmic conformal field theories and the corresponding non-semisimple tensor categories, and new developments in the representation theory of vertex operator algebras. Some of the papers contain detailed introductory material that is helpful for graduate students and researcherslooking for an introduction to these research directions. The papers also discuss exciting recent developments in the area of conformal field theories, tensor categories and their applications and will be extremely useful for researchers working in these areas.

Dermatology is a complex and puzzling world of itching bumps, pim­ ples, and rashes. The multitude of clinically distinct skin diseases, their frequently unresolved pathogenesis, and the exponentially in­ creasing amount of scientific information add to the confusion about skin diseases. The great prevalence of skin diseases makes them an urgent priority for intensive research effort, and although many scientists and academic clinicians are vigorously trying to uncover we are only at the very brink of understanding the etiol­ their secrets, ogy of most dermatoses. The principle mechanisms of general organ pathology (physical, chemical, microbial, ischemic, degenerative, and neoplastic disturb­ ances) are believed to be relatively well understood. In contrast to skin pathomorphology, however little is known regarding the bio­ chemistry and physiology of dermatoses. The difficulty in under­ standing skin diseases may be overcome partially by finding biome­ dical simplifications, and the concept of "oxidative injury in dermatopathology" is just such a simplification. It should, of course, always be kept in mind that no single mechanism alone can explain the pathogenesis of a disease and that there may be a danger of over­ looking other important biological determinants.
