In these firsthand accounts of the early church, the spirit of Pentecost burns with prophetic force through the fog enveloping the modern church. A clear and vibrant faith lives on in these writings, providing a guide for Christians today. Its stark simplicity and revolutionary fervor will stun those lulled by conventional Christianity. The Early Christians is a topically arranged collection of primary sources. It includes extra-biblical sayings of Jesus and excerpts from Origen, Tertullian, Polycarp, Clement of Alexandria, Justin, Irenaeus, Hermas, Ignatius, and others. Equally revealing material from pagan contemporaries – critics, detractors, and persecutors – is included as well.

A condensed Roman history of non-Roman civilizations. To Justin (Marcus Junian(i)us Justinus), otherwise unknown, is attributed our abbreviated version of the lost Philippic History by (Gnaeus?) Pompeius Trogus, a massive account, in forty-four books, of the non-Roman world and its civilizations, from mythic beginnings through Alexander the Great, the Hellenistic kingdoms, and Parthia. Trogus’ work thus complemented the monumental history of Rome by his Augustan contemporary, Livy, and in high style traced similar moral themes: rulers and states that lack such virtues as moderation, justice, and piety bring harm or ruin on themselves, and often on their realms as well.Justin, working at some time in the late second to the late fourth century AD, did not produce a strict epitome or summary but what he calls “a brief anthology”: not unlike Florus (LCL 231), who used Livy’s history as the primary source for a brief but original military history of Rome, Justin freely selected what suited his own purposes, favoring “what makes pleasurable reading or serves to provide a moral,” with an eye to the kind of emotive anecdotes that might be useful to orators. He also blends Trogus’ language with borrowings from literature of subsequent generations. Justin’s anthology became one of the most widely read and influential books in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, indeed the main authority on world history other than Roman, surviving in more than 200 manuscripts. Also included in this edition are the “Prologues,” summaries of Trogus by some other compiler, which preserve many details that Justin omits or reports differently.

Pompeius Trogus, a Romanized Gaul living in the age of Augustus, wrote a forty-four book universal history (The Philippic History) of the non-Roman, Mediterranean world. This work was later abbreviated by a certain M. Junianus Justinus, better known as Justin. This volume presents the first modern English translation and scholarly commentary on Books 11-12 of Justin's so-called 'Epitome' of the history. These books constitute one of the five major sources for the history of Alexander the Great and belong to the so-called 'Vulgate' tradition, which in the opinion of many scholars derives ultimately from the lost historian Clearchus of Alexandria. The original work of Pompeius Trogus appears to have had stylistic and historical influences on the better known History of Alexander by Quintus Curius Rufus. In this volume the authors tease out and differentiate as far as possible the relative contributions of the historian Trogus and the 'epitomator' Justin. The commentary examines the relationship of Justin-Trogus to both the extant sources and the works of the lost Alexander historians, and a serious attempt is made to explain errors or deviations from well-known sources in terms of the methods of historian and 'epitomator' before resorting to the expedient of textual emendation. A second volume, covering books 13-15, is forthcoming.

Professor Lutherous Nie is director of the Deity Settlement on the terraformed planetoid Ceres, which orbits Earth as a second moon. He is also an egocentric jerk, obsessed with harvesting the crystalline energy of Ceres as a power source to save the dying Sun. He and other individuals with strong telepathic talents use the unique energy to manipulate the forces of nature. Thus magic, born of science, is brought into the world. Unknown to Nie, there are others intoxicated with the power of crystalline energy who will stop at nothing to possess it all. When the Ceres Project is sabotaged, the planetoid is thrown into another dimension. Nie awakes to a medieval world of magic from which many of Earths myths and fables are derived. Demonized by the gods of Ceres, Nie must learn to see beyond his own selfish needs if he is to ever return home to his wife and daughter.Standing against Nie are the Warriors of Faith, those who fight for the gods of Ceres. Among these are a superhero (of sorts) mentored by Al Capone, a teenage witch from Old Salem, a troubled modern-day Chicago youth, an Aussi rogue, and a band of misfit medieval adventurers including Justa, a 10-year-old wizard prodigy. The warriors are on a collision course with Lutherous Nie and his army of sentient beasts in a race to discover the true source of evil threatening both Ceres and Earth.Ceres: Lutherous Nie and the Warriors of Faith is an epic fantasy combining future technology, modern tribulations and historic/mythic characters in a magical medieval setting. Whether you like Sci-Fi, comedy, romance, or tragedy; wizards, cowboys, astronauts, or contemporary teen angst LNWOF has a little something for everyone and every age.

Justin's Epitome is a fundamental source for Carthage and is the only surviving continuous narrative for the Hellenistic period. This volume is the first English translation of Justin's history to appear in over 140 years.
