In order to reduce the cost of running blast furnaces (BFs), injected pulverized coal is used rather than coke to fire BFs. As a result of this, unburned fine materials are blown with the gas into the bosh and dead man areas with possible detrimental effects on gas flow and permeability of the coke column. The capacity of the furnace to consume these particles by solution loss is probably one of the limitations to coal injection. It is, therefore, important to understand the physicochemical and aerodynamic behaviour of fines including the change of in-furnace phenomena.
The Committee of Pulverized Coal Combustion and In-Furnace Reaction in BF was set up in 1993 as a cooperative research of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and the Iron and Steel Institute (ISIJ) to evaluate research initiative into this problem.
This book reports on the JSPS/ISIJ Committee's activities and describes the interpretation of findings drawn from combustion experiments and the results of live furnace applications, and furnace performance.

This book is intended to be a record of the Biotechnology-Assisted Re/Afforestation Project in the Asia-Pacific Region (BIO-REFOR) since 1992, conducted in coop eration with the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (lUFRO). The purpose of the project is to promote exchanges of information of fundamental research on indigenous species in the Asia-Pacific Region in order to restore natural forests. The production, cultivation, and maintenance of forest tree species provide highly sustainable production systems that conserve soils, the microenvironment, and biodiversity The key technology for biomass production of forests is propagation via micropropagation or traditional propagation. However, there are many recalci trant species among useful forest trees to be propagated in large numbers. Recent advances in mycorrhizal technology and in vitro culture have made it possible to commercially propagate useful trees for re/afforestation. In this book, comprehensive information is provided on propagation, mycor rhizal inoculation, and reforestation of economically and environmentally impor tant forest trees, information that usually is available only in widely scattered re sources. Here, we include a wide area of the ecology and physiology of dipterocarps as a general overview, and then cover propagation techniques, mycorrhizal symbio sis, man-made forests, and biodiversity in the Asia-Pacific region.

Global warming, environmental changes, water shortage, and sustainable development are the most up-to-date issues, which have challenged mankind. Researchers worldwide are engaged in addressing some of these problems, including reduction in carbon dioxide accumulation, and enrichment of perennial woody species on the terrestrial ecosystem. About 12 million hectares of the world's forests disappear every year. By 2025, the world population will reach 7. 5 billion, and the forest area will be reduced to well below 50 % of the current area. Reforestation is an important to prevent the loss of forest resources including timber, biodiversity and water resources. Therefore, subsequent volume of reforestation over the deforested land should be followed to safeguard the forests and maintain its size, which will require a continuous supply of planting material. Similarly fruit trees, including tropical and subtropical fruit trees, are consumed both as fresh and in the processed form including juices, beverages, and dried fruits. They are an important source of nutrition e. g. rich in vitamins, sugars, aromas and flavour compounds, and raw material for food processing industries. The production, cultivation and maintenance of tree species provide highly sustainable production systems that conserve soils, microenvironment and biodiversity. Fruit trees have longjuvenile periods and large tree size. In many fruit trees e. g. avocado and others controlled crosses are difficult to make due to massive fruit drop.
