There are over 250 surgical residencies in the United States. Most residents experience some degree of shock once they start on the very first day, and the demands of residency are high. The current overall dropout rate is 16%, and there is evidence for higher burnout rates, suicide rates, addiction rates and divorce rates among all surgeons compared to other careers. There is therefore a critical need for the education of resiliency during surgical residency and guidance on surviving this challenging portion of their career. Unfortunately, the experiences of trial and error are the basis for survival, and resiliency training is often overlooked as part of the traditional surgical training. This practical guide is founded on many conversations with struggling general surgery residents and will have wide appeal, utilizing these experiences via interviews with current residents at different residency programs and covering an even wider variety of topics, with variableexperiences based on differing ages, races, sexes, and marital statuses. Each chapter begins with a topic and a brief introduction, expansion on the topic based on their unique experiences, and then a concluding list of pearls to remember and use in daily residency. The topics are broken down thematically into five main sections, covering the breadth of residency experience and work/life balance: academics, clinical duties, life outside of work, leadership and ethics, and basic survival skills and self-care.Written by current residents for current residents, General Surgery Residency Survival Guide will be a valuable resource for everyone navigating this challenging portion of their medical career.

A career in emergency medicine can be truly rewarding, despite the long hours and adverse conditions. The decision to embark on this journey typically starts during medical school, usually with the allure of resuscitations and life-saving procedures performed in the fast-paced environment of the emergency department. During an emergency medicine residency, the young physician is faced with career decisions that may involve working in a community or academic emergency department setting, or pursuing specialization through fellowship. Following residency and fellowship training, the emergency physician may decide to purely work clinically in an emergency department, or combine clinical responsibilities with administrative, education or research pursuits. This unique text provides medical students, residents, fellows and attending physicians with a comprehensive guide to be successful in a career in emergency medicine. Sections include the history of emergencymedicine, choosing a career in emergency medicine from a medical student’s point of view, pursuing fellowship and additional training, community and academic careers in emergency medicine, career options in emergency medicine, critical skills in emergency medicine, research/scholarship, being a teacher, and carving a path in emergency medicine. All chapters are written by experts in the field, representing emergency departments throughout North America.

One of the most important exams in training of the surgeon is the certification exam, also known as the Board Exam. It is mentioned at most weekly educational conferences in residency training programs, and many examinees feel overwhelmed by the amount of material to prepare. The first edition of this text, published in 2006, represented the first major text of its kind from a major medical publisher to cover the topic of the Oral Boards in Surgery. It presented a structured approach to each surgical topic: The Concept, Way the Question May Be Asked, How to Answer, Curve Balls, and Strikeouts. The second edition, published in 2014, added several important surgical topics, included up-to-date medical information, and provided a “Summary” section at the end of each topic. This third edition provides an up-to-date review of the surgical topics covered, with several new topics added. “Answers” to the “Curveballs” posed under each subject heading have been added, and flow charts help guide the examinee's decision-making process and provide a structure for learning the material and answering the questions posed.Designed to be used in conjunction with medical textbooks and other study guides, Passing the General Surgery Oral Board Exam, Third Edition prepares candidates to think on their feet and answer exam questions confidently and accurately. It is an essential guide for surgical residents, fellows across the surgical subspecialties, and practicing surgeons who are board eligible.
