A Glossary for Doing Postqualitative, New Materialist and Critical Posthumanist Research Across Disciplines gives novices and experienced researchers clear and comprehensible introductions to theories, paradigm shifts and key concepts in postqualitative, feminist new materialist and critical posthumanist research. The ten authors, who have a wealth of experience of teaching and conducting postqualitative research, have explored 72 key concepts and binaries. Supported by links to the series website (https://postqualitativeresearch.com/), this user-friendly glossary contains short entries of the main concepts, binaries and verbs in this field of research. The series website gives practical provocations that characterize the postqualitative terrain. Disrupting the theory/practice divide, the Glossary provides a postqualitative reimagining of traditional research processes while guiding readers through the contestation of binaries and innovative concepts. The Glossary is an accessible and introductory guide for novice qualitative researchers, and is of use to established academics already working with postqualitative approaches. It is an indispensable companion to the primary texts and original sources by theorists discussed in this and other books in the series.

Navigating the Postqualitative, New Materialist and Critical Posthumanist Terrain Across Disciplines is an accessible introductory guide to theories, paradigm shifts and key concepts in postqualitative, new materialist and critical posthumanist research.Supported by its own website, this first book in a larger series is an essential companion to the primary texts and original sources of the theorists discussed in this and other books in the series. Disrupting the theory/practice divide, the book offers a postqualitative reimagining of traditional research processes. In doing so, it guides readers through the contestation of binaries, innovative concepts, and the practical provocations that make up the postqualitative terrain. It orients the researcher in the ontological re-turn also by considering Indigenous knowledges, African, Eastern and young children’s philosophies. The style itself is postqualitative through diffractive engagements by the authors and the website includes some examples of the practical provocations described in the book that give an imaginary of how postqualitative research can be taught and enacted. This book is an essential resource for novice as well as experienced researchers working both within and across disciplines in higher education.More information and pocasts for this book can be found at https://postqualitativeresearch.com/series-overview/navigating-the-postqualitative-new-materialist-and-critical-posthumanist-terrain-across-disciplines-an-introductory-guide-2/

Literacies, Literature and Learning: Reading Classrooms Differently attends to pressing questions in literacy education, such as the poor quality of many children’s experiences as readers, routine disregard for their thinking and the degrading impact of narrow skills measurement and comparison. This cutting-edge book moves beyond social, psychological and scientific categories that focus on individualistic and linear notions of the knowing subject; of progress and development; and of child as less than fully human. It adopts a posthumanist framework to explore new perspectives for teaching, learning and research.Authors from diverse disciplines and continents have collaborated to interrogate the colonising characteristics of humanism and to imagine a different – more just - reading of a literacy classroom. Questions of de/colonisation are tackled through the exploration of both education and research practices that seek to de-centre the human and include the more than human. Inspired by an example of high quality children’s literature, playful philosophical teaching and the power of the material, the authors show how the chapters diffract with one another, thereby opening up radical possibilities for a different doing of childhood. The book hopes to help transform adult-child relationships in schools and universities. As such, it should be of great interest to academics, researchers and postgraduate students in the areas of literacy, philosophy, law, education, the wider social sciences, the arts, health sciences and architecture. It should also be essential reading for teacher educators and practitioners around the world.

Contemporary picturebooks open up spaces for philosophical dialogues between people of all ages. As works of art, picturebooks offer unique opportunities to explore ideas and to create meaning collaboratively. This book considers censorship of certain well-known picturebooks, challenging the assumptions on which this censorship is based. Through a lively exploration of children’s responses to these same picturebooks the authors paint a way of working philosophically based on respectful listening and creative and authentic interactions, rather than scripted lessons. This dialogical process challenges much current practice in education. The authors propose that a courageous and critical practice of listening is central to the facilitation of mutually educative dialogue. This book will be of interest to scholars and students of education studies, philosophy of education, literacy teaching and learning, children’s literature, childhood and pedagogy.

Postdigital Play and Global Education: Reconfiguring Research is a re-turn to a large-scale, international project on children’s digital play. Adopting postqualitative and posthumanist theories, research practices are reconfigured all the way down from what counts as ‘data’, ‘tools’, ‘instruments’, ‘transcription’, research sites’, ‘researchers’, to notions of responsibility and accountability in qualitative research. Through a series of vignettes involving complex human and more-than-human collaborators (e.g., GoPros, octopus, avatars, diaries, sackball, LEGO bricks), the authors challenge who and what can be playful and creative across contexts in the global north and global south. The diffractive methodology enacted interrupts Western developmental notions of agency that are dominant in research involving young children. The concept of ‘postdigital’ offers fresh opportunities to disrupt dominant understandings of children’s play. Play emerges as an enigmatic and shape-shifting human and more-than-human agentic force that operates beyond digital/non-digital, online/ offline binaries. By attuning to race, gender, age and language, invisible and colonising aspects of postdigital worldings the authors show how global education research can be reimagined through a posthumanist decentering of children without erasure.Postdigital Play and Global Education puts into practice Karen Barad’s agential realism, but also a range of postdevelopmental and posthumanist writings from diverse fields. The book will be of particular interest to researchers looking for guidance to enact agential realist and posthumanist philosophies in research involving young children.

In Conversation with Karen Barad: Doings of Agential Realism is an accessible introduction to Karen Barad’s agential realist philosophy. The authors take on a unique approach to involve the readers in in/formal conversations between Karen, postgraduate and other researchers at a research event held in 2017 at Cape Town, South Africa. It features chapters that have been contributed by seminar delegates and organisers, which put forth the continuing impact that Karen Barad has had on their empirical work, research writing and drawing practices. The text further discusses the ethical and political significance of Karen’s work, especially in the context of de/colonizing South African higher education. The chapters offer a series of worked posthumanist pedagogical examples and describe how a research seminar was organised differently and more in line with Baradian radical philosophy. At its heart, this book makes a methodological and pedagogical contribution to the surge in literature on agential realism, whilst simultaneously challenging dominant research binaries and arguing for a more egalitarian way of working together in knowledge-creation by troubling human and more-than-human hierarchies. The book’s uniqueness is further fortified through its description of in/formal conversations, which are diffracted through chapters, a doing of agential realism to reconfigure relationships between lecturer and student, expert and novice, supervisor and supervised, researcher and research participants. These radical conversations are dis/continuing.This book will be invaluable for students and individuals interested in advancing their understanding of agential realism and Karen Barad’s influence at large, as well as students and scholars interested in postqualitative methods in all disciplines.

The Handbook of Reconfiguring Interpretation in PostQualitative Research addresses different roles, functions, and reconfigurations of interpretation in qualitative and postqualitative research. This book connects interpretation to its histories while revisioning and reconfiguring what the future of interpretation and interpretive practices could be like and how different interpretations can shape qualitative and postqualitative relationalities, discourses, affects, and materialities. It addresses different roles, functions, and reconfigurations of interpretation in qualitative and postqualitative research. What happens to interpretation when it is put into different theoretical frames including postmodernism, posthumanism, postcolonialism? What has changed and how do different epistemological and ontological spaces offer different insights about interpretation and shape diverse uses for interpretation? How does interpretation function and what does it produce during these rapidly shifting cultural and political times? This Handbook can be used as a main text for introduction to qualitative research courses, advanced courses focusing on interpretation, post qualitative research practices, or social science methodologies. It could also be used as a supplementary textbook for qualitative methods courses including qualitative design, representation, and (post)practices courses.

The Posthuman Child combats institutionalised ageist practices in primary, early childhood and teacher education. Grounded in a critical posthumanist perspective on the purpose of education, it provides a genealogy of psychology, sociology and philosophy of childhood in which dominant figurations of child and childhood are exposed as positioning child as epistemically and ontologically inferior. Entangled throughout this book are practical and theorised examples of philosophical work with student teachers, teachers, other practitioners and children (aged 3-11) from South Africa and Britain. These engage arguments about how children are routinely marginalised, discriminated against and denied, especially when the child is also female, black, lives in poverty and whose home language is not English. The book makes a distinctive contribution to the decolonisation of childhood discourses.Underpinned by good quality picturebooks and other striking images, the book's radical proposal for transformation is to reconfigure the child as rich, resourceful and resilient through relationships with (non) human others, and explores the implications for literary and literacy education, teacher education, curriculum construction, implementation and assessment. It is essential reading for all who research, work and live with children.

In short, this book will speak to anyone interested in the ‘what’ and the ‘how’ of educational encounters and who is interested in alternatives to the dominant neoliberal national curricula, educational policies and humanist teaching, research, and conference agendas.
