The interplay between work and health has long been recognized through almost a century of research. In Work and Health, the authors summarize and build on this foundation by focusing on the complex and bidirectional relationships between work and health. There is little doubt that various aspects of the work environment contribute to individual physical and mental health. However, there is also growing recognition that individual employees' health issues may manifest in the workplace and that individual health has direct and indirect effects on workplace behaviors. Accordingly, this volume advances the argument that health is an organizational issue--organizations benefit through addressing health issues and, correspondingly, incur the costs of ignoring such issues. By extension, organizations have both the incentive and the obligation to address issues of employee health. Covering topics such as sleep and telework, physical activity and physical health, positive mental health, and toxic work environments, this book offers valuable insights and suggestions for future research for organizations and individuals alike.

Work can benefit workers' health and well-being by offering a sense of meaning, social connections and a source of income. Yet an increasing number of workers report experiencing stress in their jobs, caused by job insecurity, working long hours, excessive workload, and the like, with significant implications for both mental and physical health.Designing, Implementing and Evaluating Sustainable Interventions in Organizations offers a systematic approach to fostering worker health and well-being through participatory organizational interventions. These types of interventions address the underlying root causes of workplace stressors and give workers a voice in prioritizing needed changes. Synthesizing evidence of best practices, this book describes the six intervention phases included in the Nielsen Intervention Model: Preparation, Evaluation Planning, Screening, Action Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation. Two case studies provide concrete methods and tools and illustrate the ways in which context can require variations in planning, implementation, and evaluation. The book also engages in a broad examination of the implications of social policies and regulatory environments for intervention practices. This evidence-based and step-by-step approach to build healthy organizational work environments is an essential toolkit for improving well-being on the job.

This important new collection provides not only a comprehensive overview of how organizational interventions can improve health and well-being in the workplace - addressing its causes rather than the symptoms - but also the practical issues faced in their design, implementation and evaluation. Drawing on a range of case studies and empirical investigations, it is the first book to seriously examine each element of the intervention process, and to recognize the individual, group, leader and organizational factors that researchers should consider. The authors describe the various challenges to such collaborative processes, as well as the specific methods and tools that can be used in response. Each chapter offers practical, evidence-based guidance. Featuring a final section examining new directions and approaches in organizational intervention research, the book features contributions from some of the leading international researchers in the field. It will be essential reading for any researcher or practitioner interested in the practical issues involved in improving the organization, design and management of the contemporary workplace.
