This static perception of nature was, for example, immortalized in countless paintings of the ideal pastoral landscapes of the 18th-century English parks, or in glossy photographs of postmodern garden compositions. A pictorial approach required the strict control of ecological processes such as erosion, decay, emergence, and changes in plant populations—phenomena were considered unfavorable to the aesthetic experience of the landscape.
