Refugees and displaced people rarely figure as historical actors, and almost never as historical narrators. We often assume a person residing in a refugee camp, lacking funding, training, social networks, and other material resources that enable the research and writing of academic history, cannot be a historian because a historian cannot be a person residing in a refugee camp.The Right to Research disrupts this tautology by featuring nine works by refugee and host-community researchers from across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. Prenatal screening for genetic disorders is becoming an increasingly widespread phenomenon across the globe. While studies have highlighted the importance of women’s experiences of such screening, little is known about men’s roles and direct involvement in this process. With a focus on the experiences of both women and men, this text offers an innovative and passionate account of the gendered nature of prenatal screening.Drawing on interview data with pregnant women and their male partners in a UK city, Reed provides a compelling analysis of maternal and paternal roles in prenatal screening. Through this analysis, the book raises important issues around genetics, gender and screening practice. With a focus on the gendered production of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ genes, the book explores differences between visual technologies and blood screening. In this era of globalization we are faced witha plethora of health goods and services on the local and global marketplace. Faced with such variety and availability, how do we choose? This volume examines the influence of ethnicity, gender, and generation on our helath choices, focusing in particular on the choices of British Asian mothers: Asian women who are born and raised in Britain but are members of a globally dispersed ethnic group. Other factors (such as family, religion, community, and space) are also taken into account by the author, who uses original empirical research to explore the interconnections between the different factors and the ways in which these women combine western and nonwestern health discourses in their daily lives.
