This book presents the history of Poland through the lens of selected phenomena that demonstrate pan-European and global processes. It tells the story of feudalism, parliamentarism, nationalism and modernization, and explains how these processes emerged, developed or were implemented in Poland.The comparative method adopted here aims to study the links and transnational entanglements within the region on the basis that the optimal way of writing about a country in East Central Europe is to combine national history with a regional approach. Rather than relegating the themes of gender and diversity (cultural, ethnic, social and religious) to separate chapters, the authors aim to integrate these topics into all texts, informed by their knowledge, sources and empathy. Finally, this volume recounts both facts and the distorted paths taken by the memorialization of historic events. In doing so it seeks to answer the fundamental question: “How unique can a country’s history really be?”The volume will be useful both for beginning students and for advanced scholars who specialize in the history of Poland and the entire region of East-Central Europe to gain new information and interpretations on topics beyond their key areas of focus.

Historians have largely tended to regard Polish Jewish history and German Jewish history, from the Middle Ages to the present, as playing out solely within national boundaries, thereby ignoring the interactions that have in practice shaped Jewish cultural life. Geographical proximity has meant that Jews from both countries have been linked through kinship ties as well as shared economic, cultural, and linguistic realities. The complexity of this relationship and its consequences have been only partially reflected in scholarship. This volume takes a different approach, shifting the focus away from the nationally distinct to investigate instead mutual influences and interactions. Moving beyond the traditional paradigms that characterize Polish Jewry as ‘authentic’ and German Jewry as ‘modernizing’, it challenges the sharp historiographic division between these two communities and opens up a nuanced understanding of modern European Jewish history.Interested in subscribing to Polin? Context and time largely determine the work of Berlin-based Swiss artist Dunja Herzog. With strong connections to Africa since childhood days, she has had repeated extensive stays in Cameroon, Nigeria, and South Africa over the past two decades. Naturally, Herzog’s art explores various cultural concepts. She constantly questions the concept of authorship and examines artistic attitudes from different perspectives. Equally important to her art is her fascination with materials and craftsmanship as well as a deep interest in social conditions and the streams of finance between Global North and South.This first monograph on Dunja Herzog offers a survey of her work since 2004. It highlights the key role that the materials she uses for her sculpture play as carriers of history, and how essential collaborations are in her creative process. The essays and illustrations demonstrate the evolution of Herzog’s art over time and in various contexts, and reveal the possibilities for further development it bears.Text in English and German.

Wissensgenerierung und Handlungsoptionen für Wissenschaftler im 20. Jahrhundert in Deutschland und in Polen.Zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts hatte die Erforschung von Stoffen wie Blut und Metallen Hochkonjunktur. Katrin Steffen zeichnet in einer Doppelbiographie, wie der Serologe Ludwik Hirszfeld (1884-1954) und der Metallurge Jan Czochralski (1885-1953) als international anerkannte Spitzenforscher maßgeblich dazu beitrugen und ganz neue Wege der Forschung beschritten.Die Autorin betrachtet lokale Arbeitsumfelder in verschiedenen Laboren in Deutschland, der Schweiz, Serbien, Polen und den USA in Kombination mit transnationalen epistemischen Gemeinschaften, um aufzuzeigen, wie Wissen generiert wurde. Im Zeitalter der Weltkriege und der zunehmenden »Nützlichkeit« von Wissenschaft für die Nationalstaatsbildung war die Expertise beider Wissenschaftler eine Schlüsselressource für gesellschaftliche Systeme wie Militär, Industrie oder der Biopolitik. Dies erzeugte sowohl in Deutschland als auch in Polen ein komplexes Feld von nationalstaatlicher Loyalität, wissenschaftlicher Unabhängigkeit und epistemischer Ideale. Es führte auch zu Situationen von Anfeindung und Verfolgung, die für Ludwik Hirszfeld aufgrund seiner jüdischen Herkunft während des Zweiten Weltkriegs besonders drastisch war.
