The recent financial crisis has created a public outcry over top-executive pay packages and has led to calls for reform of executive pay in Europe and the US. The current controversy is not the first - nor will it be the last - time that executive compensation has sparked outrage and led to regulation on both sides of the Atlantic. This volume compares US and European CEOs to trace the evolution of executive compensation, its controversies and its resulting regulations. It shows that many features of current executive compensation practices reflect the, often-unintended, consequences of regulatory responses to perceived abuses in top-executive pay, which frequently stem from relatively isolated events or situations. Regulation creates unintended (and usually costly) side effects and it is often driven by political agendas rather than shareholder value. Improvements in executive compensation are more likely to come from stronger corporate governance, and not through direct government intervention. The volume also examines the effects of incentive schemes and the patterns of performance related pay both within and across countries. It documents a number of empirical regularities and discusses whether government should intervene to support the implementation of incentive pay schemes. It argues that it makes little sense to undertake reform without detailed simulations of the effect on the economy under alternative economic scenarios, based on sound analysis and extensive discussion with labour, management, and government decision-makers.

Aquatic weeds cause serious problems in water bodies throughout the world. They can, for example, block irrigation and drainage channels, interfere with fisheries, hinder navigation, and have environmentally undesirable effects on fresh-water ecosystems. The problems are most severe in tropical and subtropical countries, but they occur almost everywhere. The management of aquatic weeds poses special problems of its own. The main difficulty is to balance effective treatment against the undesirable side-effects that control operations may have on the ecosystem. This book, which is published for the European Weed Research Society, provides a detailed overview of the ecology and management of aquatic weeds, as well as the present status of aquatic weed problems in various continents. The environmental consequences of aquatic weed control measures are discussed in detail. The book will be of special interest to weed scientists, ecologists, agriculturalists, extension personnel, policy makers, and students.

COMMUNICATION IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS. ARE YOU STILL HEARING WHAT PEOPLE SAY? Every day you face dozens of important decisions -- but have you heard everything you need to know to make the right choice? Kevin J. Murphy believes that listening is the most neglected managerial skill. In this powerful audio program he demonstrates what effective listening really means -- and what it can do for you. DISCOVER: • The techniques that allow you to absorb a multitude of information quickly and accurately. • How you might be preventing people from talking openly to you -- and how to help them get their messages through. • How to tune into the hidden message in any conversation. • How to use listening skills at job interviews and in group discussions. From your boss to your co-worker to the people working for you, this program demonstrates that what you haven''t been hearing is hurting you -- and that listening is a vital key to productivity and success today.

Loch Lomond has long held a special place in the hearts of all the people of Scotland not only for its historic significance but also for the beauty of its countryside. Less widely known is the ecological importance of the area. It is the largest stretch of freshwater in Britain and the only loch to be crossed by the Highland Boundary Fault, one of the country's most important geological features. The University of Glasgow has recognized the importance of this loch situated so near the main campus and has operated a field station on its shores since 1948. In the mid-1960s the field station was re-established at Rowardennan as an all-year-round facility with laboratory and living accommodation for resident research workers and visiting field courses. In 1992 a symposium was held to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the opening of the new station and this volume presents the proceedings of that symposium and gives the state of the present knowledge of Loch Lomond. After an introduction to Loch Lomond, the papers are divided into three sections. Section I: The physical and chemical environment of Loch Lomond and its catchment.Section II: The biology and ecology of Loch Lomond and its catchment, and Section III: Issues affecting Loch Lomond and its catchment.

There is a growing need for appropriate management of aquatic plants in rivers and canals, lakes and reservoirs, and drainage channels and urban waterways. This management must be based on a sound knowledge of the ecology of freshwater plants, their distribution and the different forms of control available including chemical, physical, biological and biomanipulation. This series of papers from over 20 different countries was generated from the European Weed Research Society symposia on aquatic plant management, this being the ninth. The contributions provide an insight into the complexities involved in managing aquatic systems, discuss control techniques such as biomanipulation using fish and waterfowl and the use of straw, and deal with patterns of regrowth and recovery post-management. Careful consideration is given to the use of chemicals, a practice which has come under scrutiny in recent years. Underpinning the development of such control techniques is a growing body of knowledge relating to the biology and ecology of water plants, including growth responses under different trophic conditions, the impact of pollution, and aspects of photosynthesis. The authorship of the papers represents the collective wisdom of leading scientists and experts from fisheries agencies, river authorities, nature conservation agencies, the agrochemical industry and both governmental and non-governmental organizations.

The rapid rise in the earnings of top executives is a distinctive feature of modern capitalism. This important two volume collection presents some of the most influential published theoretical and empirical papers on executive compensation. Topics include: Theoretical Foundations of Executive Pay; Executive Compensation and Company Performance; Relative Performance Evaluation; Determinants of Executive Compensation; The Effects of CEO Pay; Accounting Measures in Executive Contracts; CEO Turnover; CEO Pay Internationally; Economic Environments and Executive Pay.The Economics of Executive Compensation draws together a wide range of literature and will be an essential reference guide for students, researchers and practioners.
