Crosslinguistic Influence and Second Language Learning provides a comprehensive overview of what is currently known about prior language knowledge and experience in second language learning. Three bodies of research are critically reviewed to achieve this goal: (i) theories of language learning that attribute critical roles to prior experience in explaining second language development, (ii) empirical studies of second language learning that have investigated roles for crosslinguistic influence, and (iii) instructional studies that have supported second language learning by addressing the negative effects of crosslinguistic influence. Using this foundation, new research directions and theorization in the field of second language acquisition are proposed. This book will serve as an excellent resource for students and scholars with interests in (instructed) second language learning, applied linguistics, cognitive psychology, psycholinguistics, and language education.

The study of “usage” has constituted a major line of second language learning research for decades now. The concept of usage, however, can be defined and studied in many different ways.
In this comprehensive, forward-looking text, international scholars from a variety of perspectives review and critically examine current conceptualizations of usage, learning, and their connections in the field of second language acquisition (SLA). Bringing these diverse perspectives into conversation, Kevin McManus synthesizes the state of the art to set the agenda for new directions in theory-building and empirical SLA research.
This text will be an invaluable resource to students and researchers in SLA, applied linguistics, psychology and cognitive science, education, and related areas.

Doing Replication Research in Applied Linguistics is the only book available to specifically discuss the applied aspects of how to carry out replication studies in Applied Linguistics. This text takes the reader from seeking out a suitable study for replication, through deciding on the most valuable form of replication approach, to its execution, discussion, and writing up for publication. A step-by-step decision-making approach to the activities guides the reader through the replication research process from the initial search for a target study to replicate, through the setting up, execution, analysis, and dissemination of the finished work.

Anglophone students abroad: Identity, social relationships and language learning presents the findings of a major study of British students of French and Spanish undertaking residence abroad. The new dataset presented here provides both quantitative and qualitative information on language learning, social networking and integration and identity development during residence abroad.
The book tracks in detail the language development of participants and relates this systematically to individual participants’ social and linguistic experiences and evolving relationship. It shows that language learning is increasingly dependent on students’ own agency and skill and the negotiation of identity in multilingual and lingua franca environments.

'A poignant read full of empathy and a keen awareness of those small rituals that make up a life – visiting a local lake, sharing a cup of tea, writing a poem – it will make you reassess the things you value in the everyday' Nathalie Abi-Ezzi
Written in a style reminiscent of Claire Keegan, John McGahern, and Colm Tóibín, The Light at Evening is the story of a man caught between duty and dream, haunted by what was lost and what might still be found.
In a quiet corner of rural Ireland, Ciarán lives as an unfulfilled poet and teacher. Struggling with the recent loss of his father, grief settles into his days, intertwined with the quiet responsibility of caring for his ageing mother and supporting his wife as she faces cancer.
The world around him continues in its steady rhythms, the seasons shifting, the land holding its silence, while Ciarán turns inward, drifting through memory, regret, and a faint, flickering sense that meaning might still be found.
Then, in the stillness between dusk and night, something begins to change. Not redemption, but a gentle illumination, a new way of seeing and the quiet strength of enduring.
Tender and lyrical, The Light at Evening is a poignant reflection on grief, on memory and on the fragile moments of grace that shape a life.
'With a poet's attention to detail, McManus creates a visceral experience of Irish country life... Beautifully written and tenderly wrought. A real pleasure to read' Carmel McMahon
'Evoking the meaningful everyday in small town Ireland, while the banter and kindness of Irish life is set against nature’s shifting seasons and existential fears' Mary Kenny
'Captures the extraordinary beauty within ordinary lives in a small Irish town with precision, compassion and utmost authenticity' Tim Hannigan
