Recently, a great deal of effort has been dedicated to capitalising on advances in mathematical control theory in conjunction with tried-and-tested classical control structures particularly with regard to the enhanced robustness and tighter control of modern PID controllers. Much of the research in this field and that of the operational autonomy of PID controllers has already been translated into useful new functions for industrial controllers. This book covers the important knowledge relating to the background, application, and design of, and advances in PID controllers in a unified and comprehensive treatment including: Evolution and components of PID controllersClassical and Modern PID controller designAutomatic Tuning Multi-loop Control Practical issues concerned with PID control The book is intended to be useful to a wide spectrum of readers interested in PID control ranging from practising technicians and engineers to graduate and undergraduate students.

The reader will be exposed to both theoretical and practical aspects of FSA. Therefore the reader will have sufficient information to both understand the workings of FSA control and to apply it in practical situations. The book covers a wide range of topics relating to finite spectrum assignment. The general development of algorithms and the analysis of control properties are discussed in the earlier chapters. Subsequently, a class system identification method using relay as a means of system excitation is introduced; this is extended to cover automatic tuning and self-tuning of model-based control systems. The concluding chapter addresses the stability of finite spectrum assigned control systems under practical operation conditions. Simulations and real-time experimentation results are provided throughout for a clearer illustration of finite spectrum assignment control and its principles. In particular, state-of-the-art automatic tuning and self-tuning are applied to the FSA control, which is very useful for plant automation.
