This book provides a unique perspective on migration throughout Western Europe after the Second World War by exploring the complex histories of migrant children and families under the conditions of a restrictive migration regime. By historicising what ‘family’, ‘migration’, or ‘childhood’ meant in specific historical moments and places, this collection examines the impact that intra-European population mobilisation had on migrants between the 1950s and early 1990s. While previous research has focused on the many legal, economic, and diplomatic aspects of European migration, this book sheds light on the social situations, strategies, and experiences of so-called ‘guest workers’, particularly in relation to their families. Due to official archives revealing little about the lives of children who lived, sometimes for years, clandestinely, in their host countries, there is a need for a more nuanced approach to understanding the perspectives of migrating families in the mid-twentieth century. The contributions in this book bring together research from diverse fields, such as oral history, the sociology of mobilisation, social history of migration, social justice, gender studies, and transnationalism.  On various levels (from the local to the international), they explore and contextualise the strategies which migrant families adopted to help deal with the hesitation of Western European nation states to grant the right of family reunification to labour migrants. Their analysis allows to establish a comprehensive and comparative overview about the multiple social situations that shape the live of migrant families, including access to schooling, health care, or the legal system.

1933-1945: Tausende von Kulturschaffenden verlassen Nazi-Deutschland, ein Teil von ihnen geht in die Schweiz. Warum haben sie es schwer, dort Fuß zu fassen? Wie kommt es, dass das Verhältnis zwischen schweizerischen und deutschen Autoren trotz ihrer kulturellen Nähe belastet ist? Das Buch eröffnet eine neue Perspektive auf alte Fragen, denn es betrachtet das literarische Exil in der Schweiz aus der Sicht des Ankunftslandes. Die schweizerischen Schriftsteller befanden sich in Bezug auf die deutschsprachigen Autoren, die in der Schweiz Zuflucht suchten, in einer Struktur der Doppelbindung: Sie orientierten sich einerseits an den literarischen Zentren des deutschsprachigen literarischen Feldes und waren andererseits auf die Anerkennung der Peers der nationalen schweizerischen Literaturproduktion angewiesen. Indem die Autorin das Konzept des "double bind" operationalisiert, gelingt es, eine Brücke zwischen einer literatursoziologischen und einer historischen Betrachtungsweise zu schlagen und damit die ambivalente Haltung der Schweizer Autoren zu erklären.

A transepochal perspective can show that mobility is constitutive for all human societies. This issue places gender-specific aspects, which have been insufficiently researched so far, at the center of investigation. The chosen approach allows migration to be characterized as a historically diverse and multifaceted phenomenon – beyond the common dichotomous view of supposedly adventurous men and sedentary women. It brings newly into focus reasons, forms, spaces, organizations, and consequences of mobility. The contributions shed light on gender-specific aspects of labor migration, migration policies, and the logics of societies of origin and receiving societies in an intra-European and transatlantic context, from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.
