En 1919 Kurt Schwitters  adoptó el término "Merz" como la marca de su movimiento unipersonal con el que había comenzado a nombrar, organizar y promover sus diversos proyectos: literatura Merz, collages Merz, escultura y arquitectura Merz y, como una forma especial de Merz, el arte-i. También hubo un escenario Merz en donde se organizaban "veladas Merz", e incluso una agencia publicitaria.Entre 1923 y 1932, publicó 17 números de la revista Merz en la editorial que creó específicamente para este propósito. Esta revista representa un evento fundacional de su trabajo como artista: en ella se materializan, en términos de contenido, diseño y composición, sus intereses y procedimientos, así como el desarrollo y el posicionamiento de su concepto de arte.La última actividad editorial de Schwitters fue la impresión de su "Sonata prístina", publicada como Merz 24 en 1932. En 1926, Schwitters había planificado un número diseñado tipográficamente por Lissitzky, que sería editado por Katherine Dreier en los Estados Unidos. Después de haber tenido una discusión con Lissitzky, Schwitters asumió el diseño de la partitura, pero el proyecto quedó en la nada. La revista Merz, por sí sola, es su legado artístico-editorial.
