Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,0, University of Cologne, language: English, abstract: Ancient Egypt and the Gothic go well together - or to be more precise, modern images of what most consider to be a magical and enchanted, rather exotic period in history appear to find their most touching expression in what is widely considered to be a typical gothic manner of representation. This paper deals with Stephen Sommers s movie The Mummy , released in 1999 (c.f. International Movie Database, IMDb). It might be considered a Blockbuster, as it was able to not only regain but more than double its budget within the opening weekend alone (c.f. ibid.). What are the reasons for such a success? Two of them may already be found in the opening sentences of this introduction The Mummy successfully unites both the audience s visions of ancient Egypt and a typical covert, but still tangible gothic way of narration and style. However, another layer has been added that seems to have contributed to the movie s success at international box-offices: the idea of an eternal love obviously doomed from its very beginning. It is this fatal love between a high priest and the Pharaoh s mistress that represents the center of this paper s argumentation. It will be examined whether this love can be called the prima causa (Conrad 1973: 17) of the catastrophe that follows it. Furthermore, it will be shown how well the love-story fits into the film s general story and to its gothic appeal. In preparation for this discussion, the paper enlists criteria of what is considered being a representative gothic novel and compares these criteria with characteristics of the movie. Additionally, the movie s villainous couple and their love will be examined: Can he be seen as a typical gothic villain and is he a se (ibid: 18) evil or are the origins of his villainy to be sought in his environment? Does she truly love him or only see him as her possibility to oppose society and escape into a better future? In this context, the paper will also explore some current theories about the Byronic hero and heroine and their representation in literature. Again, the characteristics of this literary figure will be listed and compared to those of Imhotep and Anck Su Namun it will then be examined whether the two of them can be read as such archetypes of literature.

Essay from the year 2015 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,3, University of Cologne, language: English, abstract: This paper deals with the socio-cultural parameters of representation in movies, focussing on a comparative reading of Cooper's (1933) and Jackson's (2005) "e;King Kong"e;-movies. The academic consideration of movies and their significance regarding the creation and shaping of discourse is a relatively new, yet fruitful approach to socio-cultural studies (c.f. Erb 1998: 13f. a. Benshoff & Griffin 2004: 3). Like other cultural items, movies reflect the norms and realities of the environment they are produced in and, thus, feature statements about what their respective culture of origin considers to be normal on both overt and covert, or, conscious and unconscious levels (c.f. Vogler 1978: 109). The presentation of these notions in Hollywood films offers keen insights into the ways that different groups of American people have been treated (and continue to be treated) (Benshoff & Griffin 2004: 3). It is therefore important to note that the, albeit fictive, representations of people on screen are also capable of influencing their perception in real life (c.f. ibid.). The analysis of genre movies appears to be especially suited for socio-cultural considerations, as these movies not only provide comparable narrative structures, but also feature recurring tropes (c.f. Stymeist 2009: 395f. a. Benshoff & Griffin 2004: 30f). Furthermore, the extent of their success and endurance mirrors their respective capability of representing and mediating discourse, as well as contextualizing it with regard to current social realities (c.f. ibid.). Taking these parameters into account, it can be argued that the horror genre is particularly promising in this respect, as it usually features a monster which counters social norms concerning notions such as race, class and gender (c.f. ibid.). In that, the monster embodies a society s fears and is sometimes even regarded as a perversion threatening the status quo which, in classic Hollywood horror films [...], is conventionally represented by middle-to-upper-class, white, heterosexual couples and patriarchal institutions (Benshoff & Griffin 2004: 31). Merian Cooper s King Kong (1933, c.f. Internet Movie Database, IMDb) might arguably be the most striking example that comes to mind when evaluating the socio-cultural impact of horror movies, especially when focusing on the representation of race, gender and culture (c.f. Cowlishaw 2006: 1714, Stymeist 2009: 396f. a. Erb 1998: 13-15). [...]

Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 2,3, University of Cologne, language: English, abstract: Theories about speech production and its underlying rules are of increasing interest for linguistic research and have been for many years already. Errors of speech play an important role in these theories, as do errors in reading and writing. Although latter error types deliver further evidence supporting the ideas presented in this paper, the considerations gathered will, in default of space, be restricted to slips of the tongue. This error type is by Boomer s and Laver s definition: an involuntary deviation in performance from the speaker s current phonological, grammatical or lexical intention. Further distinctions will be made in respective chapters of this paper. Each error type will be illustrated by examples found in the appendixes of Fromkin s Speech Errors as Linguistic Evidence (1973) and Cutler s Slips of the Tongue and Language Production (1982). All of the presented examples will be indented and made up in the same way: the intended sentence, phrase or word is to be found on the left, the erroneous output follows after a symbol. Where it is possible, personal observations and own examples are added.

Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,3, University of Cologne, language: English, abstract: The reuse of ideas already in existence - be it in parts, as a whole or as a basis for further development - seems to be a creative practice as old as art itself and is most commonly referred to as 'adaptation'. Yet, the exact properties denoted by this term often remain unclear, resulting in either an almost extreme narrowing or broadening of its qualities and leading to an ongoing discussion of its social and cultural value, authority and purpose. However, since the emergence of cinema, one facet of adaptation theory appears to dominate the topic s recent discussion in both popular and academic writing, namely movie adaptations based on literary originals, offering rather striking examples for the practice s challenges and problems, but also illustrating the numerous possibilities it provides. This paper primarily deals with a special aspect of these discussions: the faithfulness of movie adaptations. Seemingly, the degree of loyalty which cinematic adaptations display towards their literary originals functions as the bone of contention in many, presumably even most of the often heated debates centered around this part of a generally broad discourse as, interestingly, non-scholarly audiences and academic writers alike tend to judge an adaptation s quality on the basis of its, however generated, faithfulness to an original.

Jahrhunderts Einzug in mannigfaltige Wissensdisziplinen.
