Leopold von Sacher-Masoch (1836–95) var en uppburen författare på sin tid: hans romaner var storsäljare och översattes till många språk. Allting ändrades i det ögonblicket då psykiatern Krafft-Ebing använde Masochs namn för att döpa en av de sexuella perversionerna, liksom han också använde Markis de Sades. Plötsligt blev Sacher-Masochs texter obscena. Venus i päls från 1870 räknas numera som en av världslitteraturens stora erotiska klassiker. Den romantiskt lagde Severin förälskar sig i den frimodiga Wanda. När hon vägrar bli hans hustru förklarar han sig vilja bli hennes slav. De upprättar ett kontrakt där han överlämnar sig till liv och lem åt hennes godtycke: hennes enda plikt är att bära päls när hon piskar honom. Den märkliga kärlekshistorien accelerar mot katastrofen. Ännu märkligare är det då vi vet att författaren genomlevde en liknande historia samtidigt som han skrev sin berättelse, som än idag talar till oss om erotisk besatthet och en passion på avgrundens rand. This is Leopold Von Sacher-Masoch''s 1870 novella, "Venus in Furs". A man haunted by a disturbing dream of the goddess Venus wearing furs seeks advice from his friend, who recommends that he read a manuscript called "Memoirs of a Suprasensual Man". The manuscript tells the tale of a relationship of dominance, submission and, finally, humiliation. Part of his epic series called "Legacy of Cain", the story draws from themes of female dominance and sadomasochism, and is heavily based on the authors own life. Leopold Rittervon Sacher-Masoch (1836 - 1895) was an Austrian journalist and writer. He is most famous for his romantic stories of Galician life. Notably, due to the nature of his writing, the word "masochism" is derived from his name. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive.
