Our planet is always in a state of change. Some of these changes - climactic and geological - have led directly and indirectly to the way we are today, providing triggers for adaptation. We as humans may have had more influence on that change as our population increased relentlessly, but it is always with us.Cut to the future …The first two centuries of the second millennium were disastrous. Africa, as the most climatically vulnerable continent, suffered enormously. Whole populations were wiped out and only in isolated places did technologically minded humans survive.But there were other survivors too - those who still preserved the more environmentally friendly life-style of previous times - those who were not greedy.Three cultures are represented in the three books of this series. In book one - Remembering Green - we begin the story with Rain, who is soon to be initiated as a wise woman of the River People living along the banks of the Limpopo River. Rain has custody of the River People's Rain Animal - a lion cub called Saa.Rain and Saa are captured by Tekkies - people from the south who have managed to cling onto their old lifestyle by fortifying Table Mountain, which is now an island. There Rain meets, and falls in love with, Ghau, a boy from the Desert People of the Kalahari. There is a third major character, Tugela, who comes from the mountains of the east. These three, known as the Rain Children, are the hope of Africa and survival.Their stories are interwoven as they must work together - with the lion Saa - to make the old ways work again and to overcome the Tekkies and their greed.They must do this as the Tekkies begin to run out of even the last resources they have stolen from the land. They can no longer make water. Their fuel has all but gone. They are desperate.But there are also signs of hope as the climatic cycle begins to swing. The planet is in recovery - and the Rain Children are ready to lead their people into a new time.

This story is set in the Kalahari Desert, where the San people have lived for centuries. Although it is a story, it is based on real events in the area. A young San boy hears people talking about change that is coming to their land and to the way they live because big companies are prospecting for diamonds. Then one day the boy's grandfather takes him out hunting and he tells him a story about his own youth and how he was affected by the desire to make money.

The reader meets Jono, a boy staying with his grandmother at her Karoo farmhouse. The story flashes back to a walk they took together in the Karoo. She tells him how the world is always changing over time. She shows him a dinosaur fossil and explains how fossils were formed. Jono is surprised at how long ago dinosaurs lived.

Strings of beads presents the history of beads from their earliest beginnings to their use in South Africa today. It explains what beads are used for and how to make ostrich beads. The reader is taken on a historical journey to southern African sites where archaeologists have found very old beads. It also tells about beads from ancient Egypt. The book ends with a look at beads today and how they create work for South Africans.

Readers are lured by the title of this book to find out more about being an archaeologist. The book uses an interview box containing questions and answers to explore what archaeologists do. The archaeologist answering the questions works in South Africa, focusing on the Later Stone Age and the lives of the San people. She takes the reader on a short journey in the life of an archaeologist.

Koba is a San girl living with her family in the Kalahari. Her Grandmother repeats a phrase throughout the story: 'It is not like it was in the old days. Everything has changed!' The story shows how modern technology has changed the San people's lifestyle, but it also shows how some of the beautiful, simple things have not changed, such as telling stories around the fire and the smell of cooking. The story ends with Grandmother thinking about making a big personal change - learning to read.
