White e Ignacio Bernal, publicada originalmente por el Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH) en 1960 y reeditada en formato electrónico con ISBN 978-607-2634-70-1.El volumen reúne dos contribuciones complementarias sobre la figura del investigador suizo-americano Adolph Francis Alphonse Bandelier (1840-1914) y su relación intelectual con el antropólogo norteamericano Lewis Henry Morgan (1818-1881), uno de los fundadores de la antropología evolucionista. La Primera parte —a cargo de Leslie A. White, catedrático de la Universidad de Michigan y autor de Pioneers in American Anthropology: The Bandelier-Morgan Letters (1940)— consiste en la traducción al español de los capítulos IV, V y VI de su extensa introducción a la correspondencia de Bandelier con Morgan (166 cartas, 1873-1883), realizada a petición de Ignacio Bernal. Estos tres capítulos abordan: (IV) La conversión de Bandelier a los puntos de vista de Morgan —el proceso gradual, documentado carta a carta, por el que Bandelier pasó de defender la existencia de monarquías, feudalismo y aristocracia en el México antiguo a convertirse en el más celoso "discípulo" de la tesis de Morgan—; (V) Examen crítico de las interpretaciones de Bandelier y Morgan sobre la sociedad mexicana antigua —análisis de la evidencia aportada por ambos autores sobre la organización gentil (gens), la presencia o ausencia de democracia, la estratificación social y las relaciones de propiedad en la sociedad azteca al tiempo de la Conquista—; y (VI) Análisis de la posición de Morgan y de Bandelier —conclusión de White de que ambos fueron incapaces de demostrar que la sociedad azteca pertenecía al nivel de societas (organización basada en parentesco), y que los propios hechos citados por Bandelier evidencian que la sociedad mexicana había superado ese estadio y desarrollado una estructura de clases basada en relaciones de propiedad y territorio. La Segunda parte —a cargo de Ignacio Bernal, entonces jefe del Departamento de Monumentos Prehispánicos del INAH— comprende la correspondencia de Bandelier con el historiador mexicano Joaquín García Icazbalceta (encontrada entre los papeles de este último), con prólogo y notas de Bernal.
