Memory matters. It matters because memory brings the past into the present, and opens it up to the future. But it also matters literally, because memory is mediated materially. Materiality is the stuff of memory. Meaningful objects that we love (or hate) function not only as aide-mémoire but are integral to memory. Drawing on previous scholarship on the interrelation of memory and materiality, this book applies recent theories of new materialism to explore the material dimension of memory in art and popular culture. The book’s underlying premise is twofold: on the one hand, memory is performed, mediated, and stored through the material world that surrounds us; on the other hand, inanimate objects and things also have agency on their own, which affects practices of memory, as well as forgetting. This volume pursues a new line of research in cultural memory studies by understanding memory as a performative act in art and popular culture. The authors take their cue from the observation that art and popular culture enact memory and generate processes of memory. They do memory, and in this doing of memory new questions about the cultural dimensions of memory arise: How do art objects and artistic practices perform the past in the present? What is their relationship to the archive? Does the past speak in the performed past (or do we speak to it)? To what purpose do objects "recall"? And for whom do they recollect? Here authors combine a methodological focus on memory as performance with a theoretical focus on art and popular culture as practices of remembrance. The essays in the book thus analyze what is at stake in the complex processes of remembering and forgetting, of recollecting and disremembering, of amnesia and anamnesis, that make up cultural memory.

Doing Gender in Media, Art, and Culture provides a critical introduction to recent developments in cultural gender studies. Focussing primarily on the fields of art, culture, and media, it encompasses literary, historical, film, performance, and indigenous studies, as well as the digital humanities.Gender studies currently find themselves at the heart of a deeply troubling socio-political landscape. The 18 chapters in this volume aim to provide knowledge on how to understand the current backlash against feminism and how to navigate the increasingly polarised debates surrounding systemic racism and sexism, anti-trans violence, and non-binary gender identifications. It teaches its readers how to address epistemic inequalities in knowledge production and how to make sense of the role of gender in thinking about racism, climate change, and armed conflict. Analysing the mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion is a core task of feminist scholarship and, consequently, motivates the intersectional and gender-sensitive research methods that are brought to the fore in this book. This vibrant and wide-ranging collection of essays is essential reading for anyone seeking an accessible yet sophisticated guide to the foundational issues, concepts, and debates within gender studies.

While the so-called material turn in the humanities and the social sciences has inspired a vibrant discourse on objects, things, and the concept of materiality in general, less attention has been paid to materials, particularly in cultural studies scholarship. With each of its chapters taking a particular material as its point of departure, this volume offers a palette of fresh approaches to materials within the realm of cultural studies. The contributors call for a materials-based perspective on culture, which has become all the more pertinent in times of climate change, energy crisis, conflict, migration, and the lingering coronavirus pandemic.
