This volume provides a broad outlook on migrant youth and schooling in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Iceland and the United Kingdom. It explores empirically how these young people—who range from the first to the third generation—position themselves in relation to school, friendships, language-use, aspirations, and the expectations placed upon them. The book also examines the role of a variety of professionals, street-level bureaucrats, and other key actors in framing, representing, problematizing and ultimately contributing to shaping the experiences of these young people. Contemporary contextual challenges for educational advancement are particularly highlighted, as are key issues of cultural representation and recognition. Several contributions also focus on sub-groups within the immigrant-origin population that have so far only received a limited attention in the literature, such as youth in rural areas, LGBT youth, first-in-family college students, and youth who transition out of anti-school subcultures. The contributors stem from a variety of disciplines, ranging from Education and Youth Studies to Social Work and Sociology, and tackle many innovative themes, such as peer violence, special needs education, and artistic interventions, among many others. Through this original perspective and comparative outlook, the book makes an important contribution to the literature on youth, migration, identity, and education. It will interest undergraduate students in several areas of the social sciences, teachers and other professionals who work with children and young people.

This edited volume investigates the complexities of child refugees and migrants from a global perspective. With millions of young migrants and refugees worldwide, there is a need for novel understandings and conceptualizations of the impact of national policies affecting these children, as well as a thorough investigation of possible methodological dilemmas within research on and with migrant children and youth. This book addresses these in three parts. Part one examines the life experiences of child migrants and refugees with emphasis on how different forms of mobility shape them. Part two explores different contexts of education: How education directed at child migrants becomes organized, the specific educational needs that migrant children have, and the inclusion and possible exclusion of migrant children. Part three discusses and problematizes ethical dilemmas that research on and with migrant children and young people awakens. Foregrounding nuanced perspectives from the “Global South”—or the “world majority”—often ignored in traditional migration research, this book fills a crucial gap in childhood and youth studies as well as migration research.

Sweden is often pictured as a country with a strong welfare system and low levels of inequality. But it is also described as a country which has undergone fundamental restructurings of its welfare system since the 1990s, and where social inequality is now growing rapidly. This development is strikingly visible among people with a migration background. Inequalities and migration sets focus on ongoing developments and debates about the Swedish welfare system in relation to migration. It introduces the international reader to current developments of inequalities and migration in Sweden in broad historical and international perspectives. The book also offers in-depth insights into how the dynamics of growing inequality unfold in regard to a range of phenomena and areas of intervention, including the role of civil society. The selected case studies focus on inequalities and hierarchies in relation to both various forms of cross-border mobility and the increased diversification of Swedish society. The book fills a gap when it comes to English language course literature about contemporary debates regarding social policy and social work in relation to migration in Sweden. At the same time, it is well suited for a broader range of readers, including policy makers and practitioners outside of Sweden.
