Das Buch gibt einen Überblick über Entstehung und Entwicklung der ethnomethodologisch orientierten Konversationsanalyse, führt in die Methodologie der Datengewinnung ein und behandelt detailliert anhand der Analyse französischer Gesprächstranskripte die wichtigsten Themen (wie Sprecherwechselsystematik, Reparaturen, Grundformen sequenzieller Organisation, Eröffnung und Beendigung, thematische Organisation, Erzählinteraktionen). Im Zentrum stehen die grundlegenden konversationsanalytischen Arbeiten (insbesondere von Sacks, Schegloff und Jefferson), es werden aber auch neuere Entwicklungen (Einbeziehung von Prosodie und Multimodalität) skizziert.
