Biomechanics and Mechanobiology of Bone: From Model to Patient provides readers with a comprehensive overview of the modelling and assessment of bone biomechanics. It addresses topics such as biosubstitutes and bone implants from the point of view of design, properties, computational modeling, and choice of biomaterials. It concentrates on the biomechanics and mechanobiology modeling approaches of bone, including biological models, multiphysical approaches, surface and volumetric growth models, and bone fluid flow models. This is augmented by case studies and examples of models for computer-aided diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of bone diseases. Readers are introduced to bone physiology, adaptation, and disease, including cellular aspects at the root of bone mechanotransduction and leading to bone growth and remodeling, and management of diseases. Chapters also cover the mechanical, multiphysical multiscale properties of bone and constitutive laws including bone viscoelasticity, poroelasticity, bone damage, fatigue and fracture, as well as measurement techniques of bone properties.Offers a comprehensive reference for a multidisciplinary audience of researchers, engineers, computer scientists, and clinicians, focusing on the imaging and modeling of bone biomechanicsPresents all the components necessary to build realistic models for patient-centered assessments of bone fractures, damage and fatigue, biosubstitutes, and implants, as well as for broader clinical researchExplores computer-aided diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of bone diseases and conditions

East Timor hit the world's newspaper headlines in August 1999 after its bloody, brave vote for independence from Indonesia - one of the great expressions of a people's democratic spirit and its oppression. Before that - as a Portuguese colony and for twenty-four years of murderous Indonesian rule - it had been ignored. Between the silence and the headlines is the story of a people struggling to form an identity under different forms of colonialism. This memoir describes Luis Cardoso's journey from childhood on the island of Atauro, surrounded by folk stories and the scent of the 'ai-dik-funam', to adolescence in the seminary and eventually joining other Timorese students in Lisbon. He soon realizes that this pilgrimage to the distant colonial fatherland is in fact an exile. In his absence, the Indonesian invasion forces a second wave of the Timorese diaspora - including Cardoso's ailing father - from whom he learns the first details of the fate of his fellow Timorese.
